Are TV audiences too whiny or just easily upset? (Spoilers)

So, for starters, be warned, I'll be making spoilers for The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones to make a point. Read ahead at your own risk.

So, I saw a couple articles mentioning today how 'Was last nights killing of Lizzy and Mika on The Walking Dead too much shock value for shock's sake?', now, we've seen this before and I remember outrage of 'IT'S TOO MUCH!' when the fandom shock of the Starks being slaughter at The Red Wedding and to a lesser extent when other characters died on the show. Now, some might argue 'Well, if they had read the books....', sure, but this isn't about the books, but more that every time big characters die, people start decrying it as 'unfair' or 'horrible' and it makes me wonder if people who watch these gritty shows expect every member of the cast to make it through. I mean, I don't know, it's just weird how people get so upset that they actually either decry a death scene in shows as 'NO! IT'S NOT RIGHT!' or some outright refusing to watch the show anymore.

But, the point I'm getting at here, what causes so much sensationalism from some people? I mean, I love a well written show and can appreciate when a fandom's emotions ride high, but some people just get way too wound up over it. Opinions on TV shows and viewer outcry?
