The Nord in The Arrival video..what class?

Post » Sat Mar 22, 2014 2:28 pm

So watching the arrival video again yesterday, I notice that the Heavy Plate wearing fella, who I'm guessing is a Nord, didn't seem to do any type of magic attacks. Just pure melee swinging. While it's a video and should be taken with a grain of salt when comparing to the game, I'm wonder what Class is he suppose to represent. He didn't seem to fit the Dragon Knight or Templar models in regards, since at least from my playing them in the beta they had a mix of magic and standard attacks.

Which brings me to my real question. Which class would I choose if I wanted closest to the experience of being a dual wield\2handed warrior type? During the beta, I played Nightblade, DK and Templar to level 10. I don't really care for the nightblades, as I'm not a rogue\stealth minded person. Dragon Knight felt kinda weak compared to the Templar and Nightblade, and the Templar seemed to be a little more magic base then I care for. Granted I only made it to 10, so I don't have any feel for what they are going to play like at level 50+

My desire would is to be a Plate (heavy armor) wearer that didn't use much magicka, I guess Stam would be the preferred stat. I'd like the weapons to be dual wield and 2 Handers. Is that a realistic goal? Or is the harsh reality is that I'll want to be a hybrid Warrior\Paladin type or a Warrior\Spellcaster type?

Thoughts or experiences?

Dragon Knight, I think.

Just because you have the magic abilities doesn't mean you have to use them. Remember that you only get a few active slots. Just slot them with weapon abilities. I don't know how effective that would be but it is an option.

I'm holding my breath here and hoping that pure stam and pure magicka builds will be viable. Not everybody wants to be a fireball spitting dual wielding power ranger in plate armour.

The Nord warrior is the same class as the elf caster, which is it doesn't exist. But damn would I like to get my hands on her telekinesis spell. And perhaps my hands on her, too... *cough* pretend you didn't see this :D

My question to you is this: Would you play any of the TES games as a warrior and never use a single heal spell? I guess what I am asking is while I get the interest behind a no-magic warrior, is there any grey area?

My thoughts on two scenarios I'd try out:

1. Nightblade using Assassin's Strike, Blur, and Haste. No need to don medium armor, teleport strike, etc. Still uses "magic" but feel more like a duelist type of class.

2. Templar with only using heal class skills.

In any scenario you are going to be limiting yourself of which skills/trees to use, but then, you only have 5(6) skills per bar anyway, so as long as you stick to the ones you like...

I'd say if he had to have one, he'd be a Dragon Knight, just because they have that really earthy skill line. But realistically I think it'd be best to just call him a warrior, and assume he specced entirely into non-class abilities.

To answer you're question: Yes. I'm actually one of the players who have various characters in the TES singleplayer games and not used a single spell with them at all. I also have a number of caster characters, but I definitely prefer playing pure warriors or rogue/thief types as they don't have annoying flashy effects.

As for the OP: I'd assume the Nord to be Dragonknight and simply not using those needlessly flashy VfX powers, but rather relying on weapon attacks.

Well, self heals I don't really count as being really magic. But there is plenty of room for the grey area stuff. Using WoW as the baseline (because I can't remember the classes in RIFT) I didn't mind being a Paladin or a Death Knight, both of which have spellsy side and a Melee side, but at my core I liked being a pure rage driven warrior\barbarian type. Doing some of the old instances, I enjoyed that none of my attacks were locked out when a silence was cast on me. I understand the principale that in TESO there is no pure classes, though I admit I struggle to wrap my mind around the notion that there won't be a right and wrong way to play a class. I myself like the class system that has it's specs and these specs mean X, Y or Z (Dps, Tank, Healer), obviously I'm working through changing the way I view things for ESO.

What I did like about WoW is they had their version of the PTS, where you could create a max level or near max level character. There you could get a good sense of how that character plays and if it interests you, before committing to leveling said character.

That's pretty much what I meant when I said take the video with a grain of salt. I understand they could be a Hero class and that may be something we can't be or something we can't be yet

He's pretty clearly a Warrior. Just saying... not everyone needs to be one of the four classes we can be, there are still plenty of classes in the ES world. Battlemages, Infiltrators, Assassins, Monk, Witchhunter (I think?) and so on.

Indeed. I was asking to get a sense of what Dalexyz was looking for, because there is quite a large difference between "some spells are okay" and "no magic at all!" In one of those cases, you are pretty much screwed in TESO

I actually sympathize with the folk looking for pure warrior/rogue types. I like that TESO embraces hybrids, but at the same it wouldn't be fun to have your preferred class/playstyle not be available. Me, I've always leaned towards caster types, so flashy spell effects are typically a given, so it doesn't bother me, but I do understand the complaints

It's not only that some of us want to play mundane classes, its also the fact that everybody around you will be a whirling pool of magic which brings down immersion. From what I've figured ESO is a magical world, yes, but mages are meant to be rare. Especially powerful mages. Yet at level 50 you'll see everybody shooting lightning as if they were Zeus reincarnate himself.

If magic was so ubiquitous then why have all the guards in previous games been simple fighters? Battlemages are much more effective and multifaceted.

The only one who really used any class skills was the Sorceress, and even some of those were made up. In fact I'm not even sure what race the Sorceress is supposed to be; she clearly isn't Bosmer, but neither does she have the golden yellow skin of an Altmer.

In short, I wouldn't put too much stock in finding related gameplay mechanics in the trailer. As for wanting to be a pure Stamina class; there are plenty of Weapon, Guild and Armour skills to choose from. You don't even have to touch the class skills, if you don't want to. I'd wager you could even assemble a viable PvP build without them. I could be wrong though.

I just figured they were High\Wood Elf Sorc, Redguard Nightblade and Nord Warrior type.

My only fear since it's mostly an unknown at this point, is that I'll pick build I like and it proves to be worthless the higher I get and at 50, I'll be laughed out of dungeons. I prefer to be a rage filled barbarin swinging wildly with my axes. But if at level 50 I get a "OMG that's hot!" fireball that hits for 1000 or a Double nut punch uppercut that hits for 500, I would have to use the fireball. I'm just trying to figure out which class\build will least likely have the best skills being magicka base. If they managed to get all the builds fairly close so that I could actually go 90% melee weapons skills and not be dead weight I'll be thrilled. I guess we'll see how fast they apply tweaks to the different skills

I myself wish there was some "martial" (As D&D 4e puts it) classes.

Something like a WoW Warrior or a Diablo Barbarian or even basic Fighter from D&D. An ideal "Conan" type. All he had was his strength, his wits and his skill with a sword. No magic at all. He was superior in a "realistic" way by being strong and cunning and sneaky and good at what he did physically and naturally with no magic.

I too wish that was an option here. I like the "Big strong guy with big weapon" trope. I was myself wondering this very thing but I didn't think about making a thread about it, I just sort of accepted that it didn't exist in this game.

Play DK or Temp but slot your skill bar with weapon skills , and roleplay that you don't know any magic ,problem solved.

So far as I looked on ESOhead skill calculator the DK only has 2 weapon skills. Molten Weapons and like Flame Strike or something to that effect.

The Two-handed tree has a few useful abilities, but I find that the dual-wield tree is a bit lacking (personally)
