Background story

Post » Sat Mar 22, 2014 8:29 am

Hi,

First post *golfclap* :D

Looking forward to launchdate. Funny how slowly time goes sometimes. Considering what race and faction to play.I′m leaning to Breton or Imperial in AD faction. Race because I always prefer humans, AD not sure really why but I think the Queen with Miss Beckinsale′s voice sealed the deal. So now to the question. If one wants to make a short background story just for immersion or maybe a bit of RP what is this Breton/Imperial doing in AD land and fighting for them against his/her fellow race/country people? I havent played any ES games before (strange as that may seem since I like fantasy and RPGs) and I know very little of its history and lore. I read a bit on wiki and that′s basically it. Do people of different races live all over the place? in that case the reason is easy "it′s my homeland" if nothing else. But if they don′t then something must have happened to him/her to end up in AD land and fighting for them. If you are bored and have nothing to do type a suggestion :tops:

Second question: I only played beta for 1 hour so didn′t have much time to figure much out. But do anyone know the rules of you characters name? can you have a family name and so on. I need to make a list of names so Im ready on launchday .

Third: I′m not going to start the addon/no addon debate again so you dont′t have to reply to the following but I must say after the other mmorpg I′ve played it felt refeshing with such a basic UI and a screen not cluttered with things. And I was thinking that if we players have a hard time to optimize our groups/raids that means that our various opponents in pve dont need to be attuned to a minmaxed group either and maybe thats a good thing. Anyway the company/devs seems to have a vision how this game is supposed to work and I think we should give them the benefit of a doubt. How it will go I guess we will see in a year or so.

Time for bed. This will be a long week so might just as well sleep it away :D, take care and see you online!!

/MagicMissile aimed at bed.

No particular advice on backstory for your character, but I believe it is traditional to offer new posters a fishy stick, so welcome and have a fishy stick :)

Not interested in stories.

The name field can include spaces and (I believe) apostrophes, so you could what looks like a first name and a family name simply by using a space. You can use the spaces to make names like Jock the Mad as well.

Well. Heres to waiting to see if they add a viewable ingame biography ( similiar to sto. ) or have it as an addon.

That'll be fun for us RPers. ;p

Not sure what wiki pages you have been looking at but http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page is a great source for information on names, race back stories and history of TES.

first - I don't *think* you can be a Breton in the Aldmeri Dominion, unless the imperial pack ALSO allows you to build any race for any alliance - I know the Imperial race can be a member of any alliance, but I'm not sure if any of the other's can - if I'm wrong, no worries then.

As far as the WHY - if you want something at least semi-generic, you can do this...

remember, that race/nationality is, at least on an individual basis, meaningless. People in Elder Scrolls travel all over the world, for every kind of reason imaginable. Some flee criminal pasts, others hate their own race, others are in search of adventure/experiences, others are banished, some get lost, some get kidnapped, some fall in love with the girl across the border, others have to travel for work...etc...etc...etc...

your backstory can be as normal or as asburdly adventurous as you like

if you want a specific story as to why you might be opposed to your origin race, you could easily be a mercenary. Or a conscript. Or a spy. Or a psychopath just looking for an outlet to kill with a government sanction. You could be fighting to protect your Altmer wife, or you may have fled your homeland to protect your family honor only to find yourself now conscripted in a war against them. Sorry, I realize now I'm not really helping. It's just that there are SOOO many different reasons you can come up with. All you really need to know is that just because you were born a Breton, or an almter, or an orc, doesn't mean that there's some mystical power that FORCES you to be loyal to your origin race/nation. Loyalty is a choice, for all living beings, and you're just as capable of *choosing* not to be loyal to your origins as you are capable of choosing not to like broccoli.

honestly, though, I'd recommend the mercenary route. gives you a good reason not to be *initially* loyal, a reason to be fighting and killing and gathering up treasure and stuff, but still plenty of character flexibility that you can suddenly grow a conscience and regret having betrayed your homeland if that's something you'd like to play with later. Stuff like that

since you asked...

Any Pre-order, imperial or not, grants any race to any faction.

There's a great series of TES lore videos on youtube by the shoddycast guys. I've watched most of them, extremely informative....

oh. I musta missed that. thanks. Still don't know if that's enough to entice me to pre-order - but it certainly is a nice perk.

Here is a great resource for learning more about the different races and racial naming conventions. Some of the races use family names, some don't.
