Say NO to Arenas, say YES to Boethiah's Bloodlust Tourney!

Post » Sun Mar 23, 2014 12:02 am

So many people are against arenas in this game, and honestly, I agree. the e-sport that has become arenas in other games has led to their eventual downfall due to constant tweeking of classes to ensure some baseline balance 1v1, and that just ruins the game. Everyone knows this.

But..what if balance wasn't an issue, and an e-sport it was not?

I introduce to you, Boethiah's Weekly Bloodlust Tournament! Once a week, a portal or quest will open up in a different place in Tamriel each week, causing the most stoic of players and hardened of veterans to enter it in attempts to become Boethiah's Champion! A portal will take you to the Realm of Boethiah, his/her Daedric Realm, and once there, you engage in the Bloodlust tournament.

The tournament would work similarly to how the tourney worked in Boethiah's Oblivion Daedric quest; a circular arena that has gated off in the Realm of Boethiah. You start off 1v1, and then the next match is 2v2, and then 3v3, and then 4v4, and then 5v5. The last standing survivor of these matches now engages the Champion of Boethiah, an NPC of great power that will require all of your classes knowledge and prowess to beat! The first player to defeat the Champion of Boethiah is granted the Ebony Mail or Goldbrand, and this legendary artifact is taken away each week, to a "new owner" that becomes Boethiah's new Champion. This champion holds the artifact for a week, and then the cycle begins anew.

This provides a fun fast paced style version of PvP, but also offers a way to cycle through Artifacts so that we get to use them, but not for long; we can only keep them for a week, and then they disappear when the tourney commences once more.

I think this is a GREAT idea, and a great lore friendly alternative for Arenas in ESO. Classes wouldn't have to be balanced because Boethiah is the Daedric Prince of deceit, overthrow, and secret plots of assassination. There is a lore friendly to NOT have balance. It's luck of the draw.

Thoughts?

How does 1v1 balance ruin the game...that doesn't make any sense. If people want to have a preffered method of playing the game let them have it, don't neglect what they're saying based on your own bias. Implementing arenas only brings more competition to the game and more people overall which is healthy for the game and all those who didn't give a damn like myself will just continue to play PVP regardless of whether or not there is competitive gaming, what I'm simply saying is that you don't get to dictate how people should play the game Zenimax does and at the end of the day if Zenimax decide they wanna implement PVP arenas for a niche audience then we've got no room to complain because it doesn't detract from an already great experience.

World of Warcraft brought arenas to their game and blizzard said themselves that it was their biggest mistake, and largest reason that people stopped playing. So yes, if the king of MMO's says its a bad idea to make an MMO an esport, then it's a bad idea.

Ha, brings back memories. I forgot about that in Oblivion. Loved Goldbrand, would NOT want to give it up! ;)

do you even get how much dev time would be spent balancing 1v1? like, do you literally understand that? every ability, every option every class has, would have to be balanced against EVERY OTHER CLASS ABILITY. uh, yeah

Elder scrolls games have never been about balance. ever. that's why virtually every game lets you become a god that can one shot the hardest enemy in the entire game.

if you want balance, go play WoW?

That's apples oranges, my friend. All other Elder Scrolls games are catered towards single player. This is an MMO it's held to a greater standard when it comes to game balance, right now ESO's PVP is the Arma 3 of MMORPG's, the fact it's not balanced and sometimes buggy detracts from the experience for people, there has to be a middle ground otherwise you'd have sorcerers going around 1 shotting people with flame spells and wiping out entire groups with a high damaging AOE, balance has to be a part of PVP.

This thread is not about what any of the replies have been about so far. Every reply is crying about balance or warcraft. this thread is about neither, but a lore friendly alternative since the overwhelming majority is against arenas for ESO.

So talk about that, or don't post.

Single player games are totally different.

I personally am against arenas, however I know alot of people want them. So I would just like to see ESO get atleast 6 months to a year under its belt before we start adding in other kinds of PvP.

I'm not against Arenas per se, just the way they're usually implemented. Doing something different like with your idea would be a step in the right direction IMO. There's nothing inherently wrong with offering as many options as possible for people (kind of a cornerstone of ES games really) but care and consideration have to be taken in the implementation. Something like your idea or Pseudonym84s suggestion in another thread are good starting points, instead of just arenas for the sake of arenas.

Sometimes i feel as people on this forum are too close minded as far as offering more gameplay options are concerned. Not to mention in every case people agaisnt those options, point or compare it to wow. I dont know how WoW has caused so much trauma for some of you people. ESO for example is doing a different "take" on raids supposedly in the form of adventure zones. What is wrong if they do their own "take" on Arenas which is different from what other games offer?

Exactly! Do things differently!

What if the Arenas were gladiatorial in nature with their own weapons and armor so when you entered you "suited up" with what was available based on different parameters and then your skill carried you through? Instead of using your own gear you got weapons and armor the arena masters decided so sometimes it may be heavy armor and two handers and sometimes it might be medium armor and a dagger. Obviously you'd have to have some way of dealing with skill points but it'd certainly be something different and something where player skill would matter since everyone would be equipped the same.

The more ESO is different from other MMOs the better.

But isn't that exactly what thread proposes? Doing something different because everyone else does the same.

This is a very different take on the traditional arena system used in most games.

this got me thinking. What if they were similar to tournaments in M&B:Warband? random amounts of enemies, sometimes teams, sometimes not, random weapons, sometimes horses, sometimes totally unfair lol. minor rewards (some money)? all good.
