Why All Class Skill Work with Magica

Post » Sun Mar 23, 2014 9:02 am

Hi!

I'd like to see those class skill abilities that are clearly melee oriented ie Blade or Strike themed to use Stamina instead of Magica.

1st It would make sense.

2nd It would help relieve Magica dependency for those who wish to play Stamina stacker.

3rd It would give nicely more variety for buffs and passives if class skills using stamina would be counted as weapon damage you are equipped with.

thx!

I agree, there is WAY too much magic in this game. It's not just the mana usage for all the class skills that bothers me; they are all magical effects as well. Every single character is a magic user. Breaks the lore, and cheapens the TES experience

I may be wrong but isn't that what we have now anyway? Class skill use magicka while weapon skill use stamina.

How does it break the lore for every character to have access to both magic and nonmagic abilities, picking which one they want and ignoring the others?

edit: If this is a 'I could do it in Blah Elder Scrolls game but not here', then I want to be able to enchant my gear to give me 9000% dodge rate a la Morrowind, thanks.

What he means is that if you want to play as your class, you are going to be heavily dependent on magicka. If you want to play as a warrior or melee fighter, you are restricted from using class skills unless you put points into magicka. Its a problem with the classes as a whole

No, only physical damage weapon abilities use stamina. Not that I'm agreeing with the original post; I am very positive about the way the resource system is working so far (though I haven't played anywhere near end game).

It breaks the lore because in TES, magic required skill and training, not everyone did it. Not every person was a magic user. IN ESO, every class is a magic user and if they want to play their class, they have to invest in magicka

Each class can be played as a powerful mage, healer, archer or melee warrior. It's entirely up to you to customize the class according to the skills you develop and the weapons and armor you choose for your character.

You can play any class using only stamina abilities, or as pure mages that don't use melee weapons/bows. Or anything in between.

I still cant figure out how to quote someone on these forums, I press quote and it never includes the quote I quoted, but anyway, yes I understand that you can choose your own skills lines etc, but to be honest there aren't enough non magic skill lines to choose from and most people are going to want to play their class skills to some extent, which all require magicka

I agree that at least SOME class abilities should use stamina.

I've played some characters that would never use magic spells of any kind, and there are quite a few weapon feats from the one handed & Shield, Two-handed, Bow and Dual Wield skill lines and abilities from the Fighter's Guild and Werewolf that all use stamina.

Apart from the ultimates, the class abilities all seem to me to be magic spells. If you choose to use them, you are playing a mage or at least a character that has studied some magic spells, which is certainly fun, but naturally requires magicka.

Class skills use magicka so that they can all be weighted against one another without skewing the rest of the system.

Mechanically, making them different by class would actually push those classes whose skills are stamina-based to use magicka-based non-class skills (staves, mages' guild, etc), both so that they could make use of that resource and so that they wouldn't be spending most of their time twiddling their thumbs with an empty stamina bar. That probably isn't the outcome you were looking for.

Thematically, class abilities are pretty overtly supernatural. If you can't stand the idea of a character in a supernatural-laden world making use of that supernatural aspect, that's fine (although every character is pretty much magical by necessity, being a soul-less revivification of their former selves), but that's a choice that the character is making and it has a price.

I think magica is supposed to represent inner force or spirit, not necessarily magical powers. In martial arts some refer to is as Chi. Stamina represents physical conditioning promoted by, running, heavy lifting, constant drills etc. Magica represents strength of spirit, conviction, and willpower gained by disciplined practice, meditation, meticulous training.

So when my DK swings his blade or blocks with his shield it is a function of his physical endurance and strength. However when he pops dragon scales on his back or channels the strength of dragon blood he is digging into his inner reserves and using mental force of will.

So if I want to play a physical beast, who ran and trained hard, I will put more in stamina and take more stamina skills. If I want to play a more disciplined monk type I will go magica instead. And focus more on those inner powers than on my blade and shield. For me this system makes sense. Boxers have their barrage of punches and Bruce Lee has his 2 inch punch, you decide which one fits your style.
