What to do with my old phone?

Post » Tue Mar 25, 2014 3:15 am

I upgraded to a Motorola Moto X from a Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus. Now the Nexus was a great phone but I don't use it for anything. I've thought about doing a factory reset but then what do I do with it? I'm in the process of transferring all of my photos off of it now and the next thing I'll do is take my music off. I may uninstall a lot of the apps too. But then what? Is there a market for these phones? If I keep it what can I use it for?

It's is rooted running CyanogenMod 11 and it's on the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat, I think the Nexus is only on the 4.2 OTA stock.

What do you guys do with your old phones?

Before you ask I did not upgrade my phone through Verizon. I am on the Unlimited Plan so if I went through Verizon I would've lost my Unlimited. I bought my Moto X off contract from Motorola and then had Verizon transfer my service to it.

Keep it for someone else, or as a spare, just in case.

Or just sell it on Craigslist after you clear out its data.

are you a Canadian citizen?

every Canadian province has a office in their provincial capital for "Computers for Schools", a non-profit branch of the Federal Department of Education..

its a great place to drop off old pieces of technology.. they refurbish what they can (and send it to schools and non-profit companies), and what can't goes to recycling plants..

in the case of your phone, they would likely Degauss it for you (So no data miners can recover what you had on it), then recycle it accordingly...

I am not in Canada. But the US has a program like that as well, Cell Phones for Soldiers. I may go that route as well.

My previous phone usually goes to my wife, and her phone is re-purposed. Her previous phone is now being used as a music player...we use it to stream music to speakers in the baby's room over wifi. If you want you could probably sell yours on eBay...not sure what those are going for these days.

I looked the other day, they are still going for anywhere between $50 and $100. Thing with mine is not only has it been rooted but I've got like 3 cases and 3 batteries. I've got the original one from Samsung, then I have the Extended one from Samsung and I've also got a ZeroLemon 5500 M/ah battery that is only a few months old. I've thought about selling it. I'd re-purpose it by giving it to my wife but she got a Moto X the same day I did so giving it to her is probably not going to happen.

I like to keep my old phone in case something happens with my current.

You could always sell it.

Lots of cool things you can do with screens, Internet, and wifi.

You could make it into a surveillance camera for example.

Yep, that too. I mean, it is a tiny computer with a screen, wifi, camera, etc. There are a million things you could potentially use it for, and not all of them dirty. :P

OOH... How would I turn it into a camera? I've always wanted to do that and have it mounted near my stove so I can see how it's doing (it burns coal so I need to know what it's doing a few times a day).

Just doing a quick search I found this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pas.webcam

There might be better apps to use. I haven't really looked for one, personally.

Someone might have already mentioned this, but if you don't find an organization to donate it to, most big electronic stores (Best Buy for example) have a recycling bin for old phones.

Better than just tossing it.

I found another one called WEBofCam or something. I installed it and was playing around with it. I'm going to have to look around a bit more. This surveillance thing might come in handy.
