Making some weapons for Morrowind

Post » Sat May 08, 2010 8:52 pm

Well seeing as how I don't know when my desktop will ever be up and running again I've decided to try my hand at some Morrowind mods. I figure I'd bring my weapons specialty over from Fallout 3. I've been playing Diablo 2 recently and they have some neat art for some of the unique weapons in the game. I figure I'd make some of the more interesting ones and give them similar enchantments, or different ones. Either way I want to create a set of unique weapons for the game and spread them around the map.

Swords and melee weapons, unlike guns, are surprisingly easy to create especially with a lower polygon limit. A lot of these shouldn't take very long to model, or texture for that matter.

Now I know I'll need NifSkope, and I'll need the plug-ins for 3D Studio Max 2009 for Nifs. What types of texture maps does Morrowind support? Are there only diffuse and glow maps? Anything I need to know specifically about creating weapons related to the models or Nifs themselves?

Diffuse and glow are pretty much the only ones that are fully supported. You can add bump/normal maps but you have to add an environment/"reflection map" otherwise the hight data will be lost, which has some limitations. However, the technique is probably best suited for weapons and glass or similar. I heard rumors about a possible NM shader being written for MGE but that was months ago and I am not sure whats going on with that.

As for the model, just make sure its the right size and it is positioned properly and everything should work fine. Easiest way to do that is to probably import a working model for comparison. :)

Good luck with your weapons. :goodjob:
