Fix for "stolen" items bugs?

I am playing Morrowind with, probably, a bit older versions of the MPP (Morrowind Patch Project) and Morrowind Code Patch. Morrowind has sort of an annoying, outstanding bug where, at least according to UESP, once an item has been "stolen" from someone, all items of that type in the game will forever show up as being owned by that person or faction. This leads to the delightful situation where you can completely legitimately get an item from somewhere (say buy it from a vendor), then upon selling it back to the vendor, immediately get reported for theft.

So, has anyone ever fixed that, so that *only* the specific items you stole retain their ownership list? This bug is particularly confounding, because in Morrowind, it's not always obvious if you are 'stealing' something - is that item in that box outside a building in town, owned? Who knows? Might be fine to loot it. Maybe not.

As an example, I bought some hound meat from Arnand Liric in Buckmouth Legion Fort. He respawns the hound meat, so I tried selling 10 back to him to get him to stock 20, and he reported me as a thief.

I used the console command tfh to figure out why he thinks I stole it. All hound meat shows up as owned by Imperial Legion faction, and Liric is a member of the Legion faction, so apparently, ALL faction vendors will think all hound meat is stolen from them? That's ridiculous.

So, any fix for this?

Unfortunately, no. It's not a bug, it's a limitation of the game. It just can't see the difference between the items, it wasn't coded that way.

Is there at least a console command that can clear the owneship list for an item?

Just keep a list of what you stole to whom and avoid selling them an item of the same kind. ;)

I found a post somewhere else that pointed me to a tool called "Enchanted Editor" which allows you to delete the stolen items list in a save file, so that cleared it up for me.

Layonthemoon: The problem was, one of the alchemy ingredients got marked as stolen, and with ownership of an ENTIRE faction (Imperial Legion), so any new alchemy vendor I approached, if they happened to be Legion, and I tried to sell them hound meat, they would attack. Hard to keep track of that.

Yeah, that will do the job. Just be sure to keep a backup of your save. Better safe than sorry.
