Book Series: Chronological Or Release Date?

Post » Sun Apr 13, 2014 8:52 pm

I have a few book series where the author may go back in time and cover some aspect of their world, or story. Ray Feist with Midkemia goes back to the Chaos Wars and touches on some other chronological sidesteps. Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern goes all over the place. With Jennifer Fallon's Medalon series, the first 3 books released take place just after her next 3 released books.

When you read a series of books that may meander about a bit in time, or take place at differing times throughout the world, do you like to read chronologically, or as the books were released?

I always read them in order when they were published, not according to the time line.

I think they should be read as released.

I read a series of books as they are released, but I personally prefer the series to be in chronological order.. I don't want to read one book in a series, only to read a later one and realize it's set in an earlier time than the one I just finished. I'm a huge bookworm and have been reading since I was young, but I don't want to read a book series that skips around time otherwise I'll get confused and probably stop reading.

As released.

I think the Pern books are a masterpiece...two full trilogies covering the same events in the same span of time...but the second one is just as riveting as the first even though you know exactly what's happening from start to finish. Amazing.

Release date. I think getting the story as the author presented it is important. Reading them out of order can spoil them. If the first book is a mystery and the second book is a prequel that tells the story behind the mystery of the first book, then you aren't likely to enjoy the first book when you get to it.
