Azura as the Daedric Prince of Duality?

Post » Mon Apr 14, 2014 12:14 pm

Forward: This is almost entirely conjecture and ass-pull.

So, I see a lot of people, especially on the Teslore reddit, hating on Azura while giving the other princes free passes for buttholery because it's 'in their nature', and that Azura's just a duplicitous scheming [derogatory language aimed towards women].

To which I say, is Azura's seemingly inconsistent behavior not a result of her nature? All of the other Daedric Princes (former Magna-Ge aside) have domains which are concepts, except Azura, whose supposed domain is not a concept, but a pair of events. This is bizarre, unless 'dawn and dusk' is a metaphor. For what, you ask? Duality. She is both sides of each coin. She is justice, and she is wrath. She is caring, and she is controlling. She is wise, and she is scheming.

Like I said, just conjecture that I wanted comments and criticism on. And I figured it'd get a slightly less harsh reception here then over on /R/Teslore. What do you folks think?

I'm not sure duality on its own is enough, though. Otherwise there wouldn't be any distinction between her, Vivec and Mephala.

My best guess is that where Vivec is the joining of two opposites, she's the balancing of them. She stands between two sides, keeping them separate but in check. http://www.imperial-library.info/content/journal-culanwe in ESO seems to support this: "It seems fitting that the follower of the Queen of Dawn and Dusk should try to broker peace between the Nedes and Ayleids. Her realm is between times, between places, between realities."

She also has some relation to time, what with her association with fate and prophecy. I suppose you could say that because she's standing between the dawn and dusk, she can see both of them.

EDIT: Okay, quick maybe-nonsensical-maybe-insightful thought. People always put emphasis on "dawn" and "dusk," but those aren't the important parts. The keyword in her sphere is "and."

Duality is more of a Mephala thing. Duality is both. Azura is more like the space between both.

Not really sure what the deal is with Azura's sphere.

Duality is all Sheo. Have you even seen Sheo? He makes the false god Vhek look like a single toned bore.

I like this idea. Dawn and Dusk are two equal, yet opposite, events in a day, and they're cyclical. Now that I think about it, Dawn and Dusk are both transitions between two similar, yet opposite states. If Mephala is the two sides of the same coin, Azura would be the edge/transition between the two sides.

Also, it depends on what type of duality you're talking about. Sheo contains the duality between two different forms of madness, but he himself is one part of the Order/Madness duality himself (and I actually don't see that much of a difference between Dementia and Mania myself...). Mephala has duality, but it's more of a "two sides of the same coin" duality not a "both at the same time" duality not a "two things taking turns" duality.
