National historical stereotypes portrayals

Post » Tue Apr 15, 2014 6:33 am

Sorry :(

But on the topic though, I guess so? Like, the Russians and Germans are usually labelled as the bad guys in some movies and they're always either soviets or nazis. Though, that's so less in historical movies, so I may be inferring your post wrong :/ And it's like that with the movie Gallipoli, too where the Brits are portrayed as bad. These views sometimes make me uncomfortable, but otherwise it doesn't bother me so much.

I'm doing a paper on Cromwell. Pretty swick stuff, but I'm a lover of history. But I agree with the history is written by the victor thing.

It's the scene from Con Air where Steve Buschemi's character basically says working for fifty years in an office only to be told to retire and be sent to some retirement home and hoping you die before having to suffer the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet in time is the definition of insanity.

I think both definitions complement each other well.

You do come off as having a chip on your shoulder about America every now and then. It is probably your tone more than your content.

But nobody should not get in a twist over anything Hollywood does to their country. They get America wrong far more often.

EDIT: For what it is worth, as an American, I read that scene more as the other countries of the world being ready to stand together as a unified humanity rather than being subservient to America. The Americans made the plan, but everyone did their part. It was, in fact, an attempt to show that it was a global conflict and not just about America. If it was a Russian film and they called up America to help with their plan, I wouldn't consider it denigrating.

I don't know. Most of the time I see Yanks kissing British ass with tongue, and Limeys spitting on American culture. My anglopbobia probably has to do with the rudeness and judginess by every Englishman I've ever met.

(Seriously, I've never met a pleasant Brit in real life. I've known nice Germans and I'm close friends with a few French, bet every limey just looks around with apparent disgust.)

Sometimes the hardest accent for me to understand is the native English cockney-type accent. That real deep city accent, like I had one at the store one day.

Customer: "Ackuuus may, dok thees vant-ity beench's prourice enklood daleveray?"

Me: "Pardon me?"

Customer: "Aig sed, dok thees vantity beench's prourice enklood the daleveray? Ar do aye hafto peck et uop meselv an pravide me own otto?

Me: "Delivery? No, that's extra charge."

Customer: "Ohk bloddy hale!"
