Game Freezes without warning, infrequent CTD

Post » Mon Apr 21, 2014 8:02 am

It's quite frustrating, really. The game does not freeze when entering areas, as I've seen commonly reported. And I have not been able to pinpoint a common denominator through all the freezes.

Sometimes, I'll freeze after 15 minutes. Sometimes I'll get in a good hour, maybe 2 hours. The time played does not seem to be a factor.

Sometimes, I'll freeze while aiming. Or after crouching. Or after standing up. Or when I look at an NPC. I can say that I have not had a freeze while in any sort of menu. Outside of the menu, there doesn't seem to be one common cause.

My computer is not running hot. CPU is not approaching 100%, nor is RAM usage. There is no stuttering or tell-tale signs that the game is about to freeze.

At times, I do get a bit of a hang when entering cells to where the last second or so of music will loop a few times before continuing. Also, opening a container or NPC merchant's inventory will have a slight pause. This does not frequently or consistently lead to a freeze.

Notably, I am using NVSE. I've tried the latest stable and the latest beta release and have not noticed a difference in reliability between the two. The common denominator is my mod load order, which is listed below. I am currently trialing the 4GBNV.

I'm not looking for a miracle cure, I'm thinking maybe you fine folks can poke a few sticks at this one to maybe help out future couriers experiencing this same issue.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Did Boss or Loot sort the mods. The load order does not look right. I always put the official dlc's near the top. Hard to say if it is causing the issue you are having.

Do you create new saves or just overwrite them. It is best to create new saves on a regular basis. I suggest to disable autosaves.

I would also check to see that your security program is set to allow the game to access the system since quite often they have become more protective of the system and sometimes game mode is not good enough

So it's more of a stability problem. How do other games run? How does your computer run in general? Any other crashes, freezes, blue screens, restarts, etc?

Since there are mods in play, I usually start with those. Have you sorted your load order? Did the freezes just happen all of a sudden? Were you able to play sessions without them before?

Are you using texture mods, enb series, other graphic mods? Make any .ini file tweaks?

This could be your problem. That's a rather video chip for this game. You might want to consider lowering your graphics settings as it's no doubt struggling to make things work.

Good questions, both of you, and some good details that I could have included in my original post.

I have not used any automatic load order sorting. Some of them looked out of place to me, but the order worked so I left it.

I always create new saves. I use Quicksave frequently due to the constant freezes, but I do not rely on them. The only time I start or end a session with a quicksave is when the game froze and I had to restart it- otherwise I always create a new save file and load from that. I'm sitting on about 60 separate saves for my current playthrough.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, which is very non-intrusive. No warning messages have appeared. However, I have noticed that the Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) occasionally reports that the fallout.ini (in My Documents/My Games) is read-only. It seems to have been a setting inherited from a parent folder. I've removed the read only property.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Other games ran fine when I played them.. I've been on a New Vegas stint lately though and haven't played any other games on my computer for a couple of weeks. I should note that I did experience 6 BSODs over the course of three months, starting in November of last year with the last being in early February (just over 2 months since the last BSOD). No other technical problems. Those are a bit less straightforward to upload, but I will if requested.

I moved a few mods around in the load order by hand before beginning my current playthrough, but have not done any sort of automatic sorting. I can't say with certainty when the freezes started happening, but I can say that I remember noticing them become a problem about 30-40 hours in. I'd like to say that my first few sessions of this playthrough were relatively clean, but I can't say that with certainty.

Since the beginning of this playthrough, I've been using NIghts are Darker and Interior Lighting Overhaul, where the latter touches in some way nearly every interior cell in the game. Both of those are aesthetic and don't modify any graphics as far as I know. I added in a texture pack (the top texture pack on the Nexus, I believe) after about 50 hours and haven't noticed a change in the frequency. Otherwise, no graphics mods of any sort. I have not made any tweaks to the ini.

I'm inclined to disagree with that statement. Do you have a source? It is definitely sub-par to today's standards, but I have had no issues otherwise. Most games that offer an auto-detect option will set my graphics at high or medium. For instance, I can run Skyrim at a reasonable framerate on high settings. I began my playthrough at either Medium or Low settings and played that way for over 40 hours, well into the frequent freezes. I just recently changed the settings to high (and manually adjusted the AA and Anisoptric Filtering to off) and I have not experienced a change in frequency of freezes, nor a change to the framerate. As a baseline, this card struggles with anything more than the lowest level of AA on most games, but otherwise will take most other settings just fine at medium or high.

You don't want to use that one, especially with your graphics chip. Try using the smaller texture size instead. If I were you I would avoid using any sort of texture mod with your system. Notepads are not meant to play high end graphics game, which this game is. Keep things simple. Even that interior lighting mod could be causing you problems. And yes, anything that changes the appearance of a game is a graphics mod. Avoid them with your rig.

I suggest to be careful with any texture packs since they will put more stain on the video card. Laptops have to be on the look out for heat issues and graphic cards can generate a lot of heat.

I think you would be fine with the interior lighting mod. Nevada skies might be more taxing due to the weather modes.

I understand the complications behind graphic-intensive games and mods on laptops. The game plays equally well, with and without the texture pack that I recently installed. The game runs at an acceptable framerate at all times except in the most densely packed areas, such as the area with all the slot machines in Camp McCarran (the Concourse?).

I have noticed one odd thing- in some areas, there seems to be some sort of entity or entities.. flipping out, for a lack of better terms. The first place I noticed it was at the GRA trade post (Trade Post 188?) under the bridge. When I approached the merchant, I could hear something metal thrashing about. After hearing this consistently over several separate trips to the trade outpost, I decided to toggle collisions and look underground. Sure enough, right between the road and a dip in the terrain in an otherwise inaccessible area was a dead Protectron ragdolling about. I disabled it in the console and have not had the issue crop up there again.

I noticed this in a few other areas as well. Most recently, small objects were flying off the shelf inside the Mojave Outpost, and I heard a thrashing sound- similar to the Protectron from earlier- in the Abandoned Warehouse near Camp McCarran.

Now I don't know if any of these occurrences are relevant, but they are odd.

Also, I just froze after about 10 minutes of play, while listening to the intro to the Sierra Madre DLC. The animated picture story going along with the narration stopped moving, which is how I knew initially it was frozen. However, the current dialog continued playing for another 5-10 seconds to its end after the animation stopped. Then, nothing.
