Lets discuss: Hippies

Post » Mon Apr 21, 2014 4:58 pm

I don't agree with everything the hippies had to say...I'm talking about the hippies from the 60's....I couldn't share EVERYTHING I own...I couldn't live on a commune either, unless it was clothing optional.....but I doubt I could grow plants, lol.....But everything else they had to say like loving everyone I can agree with, although I can't love everyone....but I can love most people. It would be a better world if we all would atleast try to love and accept eachother instead of all this hating and judging.....and put an end to war. The only time war was ever neccersary, for America, was WW2...Vietanam wasn't....but that's beside the point.

I like hippies. I'm alittle bit like a hippy myself. Most people think I am because of my dress code and really long hair. I don't like labels, though...too confining....I prefer to refer to myself as myself.

And I love animals. I think people that go hunting, or fishing, on a full stomach are sick. That's what serial killers do. Don't get me wrong, though, I love meat...but I would only go hunting if the world had just ended and there was no more grocery stores...other wise leave the deers alone...Animals are adorable and this is their planet too...especially wolves. I love wolves.

They also have a point about rebelling against the norm, and questioning authority...I had some quotes from Timothy Leary but I can't find them..grrr

Everyone can't get along, some one will always try to take advantage. It's the prisoners dilemma. It's why communism can't work. It's the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zShHRkwSoI.

Hippies are really pure communists (not talking about the political groups that claimed that name), and communism is an idealistic fantasy, like feeding and giving water to everyone.

And keep in mind that nearly every predator out there hunts for sport; even wolves.

...

Well, this was a depressing reply.

Those danged hippies!

I don't agree with hippies, but I respect guys like eden ahbez who were devoted to a lifestyle actually living off the land, not so much respect for drug addicted musicians lecturing people on greed from their mansions.

Debatable. But that would go into politics.

As for what you're saying, the ideology of loving everyone and what not certainly isn't limited to hippies. In fact, certain religions center around it. (Though we can't talk about those either)

In any case, I suppose there is some merit to what you're suggesting. (surprisingly)

As for hunting, I'm inclined to agree, hunting for sport isn't something I'd do. But I'm not uncomfortable with others doing it - I don't have any strong feelings either way.

Good to see we've moved beyond the spam threads. Although you don't need to quadruple post Cassandra, you can edit previous posts to add any more comments you may have (also so it doesnt look like you're just pushing your own thread up)

Regarding hippies though, I largely see them as a relic of the past, something interesting to study or look at, but irrelevant today. While some things the 'movement' did were admirable like protesting the Vietnam War (or American War depending on your perspective), a lot of it was a load of useless [censored]. A lot of their ideas were like communism (and like Divinus said, they were essentially pure communists), potentially wonderful, but completely unattainable due to the nature of humanity. So while I can admire some of what they did, the vast majority of the "free love/drugs/commune" stuff pushes them in my mind into the 'lazy, drugged-up layabout' camp.

The hippie movement at least came with some http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdvCqUguIh8 during that time. Well, I like it. :disguise:

As for the hippies themselves, they were a peculiar bunch with a strange way of showing the need for loving one another and peace. As in tripping out.

I don't think hippies are relics of the past. Some of their ideaology can still be aplied....like accepting everyone for who they are, excluding pedophiles and rapist, of course...they shouldn't be acepted or loved..but everyone else, provided their ideals don't consist of harming anyone, can be, and should be. This can be a much better world if we the people strive to make it so...but how many want to do so? Not very many, and it's sad....that may be the reason this world is going to crap

That's not news. Greed has been the most prevalent motivator for mankind as far back as history stretches. The desire for power, money, fame... At any cost. It's why it's important to strive for equity and justice in society. It would take a lot of people and it would take a very long time, but it is possible.

But I don't think being a hippy is the only or even the best way to do that.

Neither do I....you don't to be a hippy to believe this....why not just be a human being instead and have respect for other human beings?
