Rules of the Pure RangerHunter

Post » Tue Apr 22, 2014 7:16 am

Greetings fellow travellers!

My latest character build is a pure ranger/hunter and I was wondering if anyone had some hardcoe immersive roleplay rules to suggest that I might have missed that would really help to bring this build to life. Here is a current list of the self-imposed rules I am following:

  • no fast travel
  • camp every night (through portable campsite mod)
  • eat/drink every day
  • never enter a walled settlement or any structure built by humanoids
  • no spells,enchanting, or alchemy
  • deactivate HUD, no compass
  • dress for appropriate weather (cloaks/hoods)
  • bow is only weapon

Yeah I'm thinking about using those mods as well. Have you played around with Portable Campsite? GREAT mod for a hunter/ranger!

Pretty sure one of the campsite mods includes a 'trap' system, by where you lay a trap and bait and, depending on the geographical location you placed the trap, will actually catch animals over time!

Also try the Fishing Mod!

It helps my immersion to avoid leveling anything that will illicit psychic guard comments. Smithing doesn't seem to illicit comments. Archery does, but then my bow is equipped so it makes sense they would comment on it. Light and heavy armor comments make sense too as the character would presumably be wearing them.

How are you intending to handle this one? There are quite a few caves where you pass into an old ruin part-way down. Are you going to turn back at that point? And some of the ice dungeons blur the line between natural and constructed. Especially Falmer and Rieklings enhanced caves.

Good question. I'll probably turn my character around whenever "architecture" appears in the cave. Mainly that rule is in place so I avoid castles, cities, forts, etc. I don't want to have an artificial roof over my head. So a tower open to the sky might be ok.

This reminds me of a certain person in the shivering isles.

My hunter/ranger build rules

Bow (long bow, no crossbow crap) Bow type is not to important but the arrows are always steel

Camp each night (using portable camping mods)

Eat twice a day.

Bathe at least twice a week

Crafts things from ingredients from kills, sells that and the meats in cities

No fast travel

Will enter cities but will never spend the night in one. Will have a few mugs of mead at the tavern but will return to camp for the night

Brews (alchemy) potions from things found

Back up weapon is usually daggers.

Very stealthy for hunting and combat.

Light armor, anything without a lot of buckles or noisy metal bits

Prefers to have sky above they're head but will venture into caves to track animals

Also has a knack for smithing, often making her own armor and weapons.

Dresses for the conditions rather then for the protection rating of the armor.

All my hunters have a base of operations, usually a small cabin from a mod.

Favorite place in Whiterun is the Drunken Huntsman heh.

Rarely takes jobs to kill people for coin. Only kills people if provoked.

My Bosmer, Erewyn is a Huntress/Ranger type. Frostfall allows you to camp anywhere so I'd use that, but she can still enter cities and such. Not often, but I don't restrict it. I kind of have to right now because RN & D has this bug that won't allow me to fill my waterskin at streams, so I can only get water at taverns.

Well depending on the race, if you choose Nord dressing for weather would be moot. Since they are resistant to even magical cold, I assume normal cold weather doesn't bother them at all.

I played a Khajiit that never entered walled cities. Obviously cuts you out of many quests (and marriage), but it was a great RP. Force me to find some locations that I had never seen before and make use of many towns that I seldom visited.

I also can't imagine not at least having a dagger(s) as a backup weapon. Even a Ranger knows sometimes you just can't avoid melee.

I would take advantage of alchemy for both healing and poisons. Only makes sense that a Ranger would know how to use plants and such to survive.

If you get Drinking Fountains of Skyrim (I think there's a patch with RND) you can fill your waterskins with spring water for free, I think the fountains are all in towns, cities and villages (e.g. there's one in Riverwood) but at least it's free and outdoors. (It's also clean water, so you don't need to boil it, and you can also drink straight from the fountain if you want to.)

But I should be able to just fill it at a body of water, for whatever reason when I try it just adds the waterskin to my inventory, still empty.

You should, but if it's bugging out, the Drinking Fountains are an extra option if you'd rather not go into the inns. Are you able to drink directly from rivers and such?

I agree with this point. Ever tried butchering your kill only using an arrowhead?

Nope, that won't work either. I might just re-install it

Drat. Yeah, that might be a good plan. Have you got any water mods (WATER, Real Waters)? I've a feeling I remember there being some sort of conflict there that caused issues with filling waters, might be worth looking into?

Yeah I have a dagger, actually a hunting knife, but my goal is to avoid any hand to hand combat. I'm sure there will be tight spots, but bashing with the bow combined with incredibly high stamina (stamina is all I put points into) AND the increased speed while in the wild perks from SkyRe Wayfarer skilltree will let me outmaneuver just about anything.

I have WATER, but I installed it before RN&D and it worked fine until about a month ago.
