my only real issue with the main quest....

Post » Thu Apr 24, 2014 12:06 pm

After reinstalling Oblivion and deciding to give it a quick playthrough, I realized just how poorly skyrims MQ was handled..

the Dragons Return as well as the World Eaters should be a major threat.. but the way Skyrim handled it was done so Poorly, it didn't really feel like much of a threat at all... Infact the way it was handled makes it seem like the Civil War and the Thalmor are currently a larger threat then the Return of Alduin and his Followers.. which is just crazy..

Say what you want about Oblivions character Appearance or Setting, or how repetitive the Oblivion Gates were. but it made it feel as if the Daedric Invasion was a Real threat.. a threat not just affecting the province it took place on, but all of Tamriel.. and as the MQ Progressed it began to feel even more threatening..

Skyrim unfortunately failed at this..

Opinions?

I can actually agree with you this time, funnybunny.

I'm playing Oblivion right now as well, loving every moment of creative writing so lacking in the majority of Skyrim's quests.

I never played oblivion and I agree with you. the MQ never felt like one at all. becoming dragonborn, killing Alduin just seemed like a footnote.

agree with you also.compared to oblivion the mq in skyrim felt very short and linear. i love skyrim (as oblivion) but the mq felt rushed.

If you don't do the war before the MQ then the Dragons are seen as a threat for about 15 minutes.
Dragon Rising and Season Unending. But then through the rest of the game they are just flying Lizards that nobody seems to know have returned.

The only problems I have with the MQ is Delphine, Esbern and The 3 Tongues in Sovngarde.

I agree but not only the main quest but almost all the quests feel kind of rushed or missing something.

There were so many things wrong with the main quest that I don't even know where to begin, but your point OP is one of the more major problems with it. Though there are two other points during it that http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b121/numeriku/yunodragonrend_zps1cddb625.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b121/numeriku/skyrimwut_zpsdd1607f8.jpg

Pretty much. I think what they did was craft the world itself, then the quests/story ect... hence why the world is quite beautiful, yet without any character or story depth it feels so very hollow.

I cant help but feel that it could have been improved alot with a simple emotional attachment, like say helping build a town and have it destroyed, or anythng of the sort. Ya know, like grown attachment, destroy attachment, or give us a sense of danger, Alduin actually appear more, and show his power, destroying geography, i dont know, just something.

Could not agree more with this topic. There are games that I normally wouldn't play but did because of a good storyline. I don't like turn-based RPG's but I was able to make it through FF-10 solely based on a gripping storyline.

Skyrim is lacking, at least on the main quest portion, a good gripping storyline. I see a dragon, I kill a dragon, I move on. The difference here is that I thoroughly enjoy the free roaming and side quests and all that goes with that. For skyrim, it is the gameplay that keeps me going, not the main quest.

As far as see a dragon, kill a dragon. I don't see that many dragons in my adventures. As time goes on and more are re-spawned, there should be more and more dragons leading to a feeling of being overwhelmed by them.

Beyond the dragons, there are little indications from the civilian NPCs that there's a war going on, no rush, not panic, no picking up arms. The battles are isolated, and easily forgotten both from my and NPC's minds (mostly due to their short-term memory programming). I'm currently replaying Oblivion, haven't started on the MQ yet, but people are always talking about what is happening at Kvatch, foreshadowing and setting up the mood for the invasion.

This is exactly what I detest most about Oblivion's main quest. Even before we leave the sewer the developers shove us into saving the world and ridding Tamriel of the cataclysmic Oblivion crises. I thought Oblivion's hysterical "Do it! Do it now! You have to save Tamriel!" tone was abysmally poor writing.

I thought that Skyrim approached its main quest in a more sophisticated manner. In this it resembled Morrowind. Morrowind and Skyrim both built their stories up slowly. We begin as ordinary prisoners in both games. As far as we know in the beginning, no large events are happening in either game. Gradually we come to realize in both games the magnitude of what is facing us.

A good novel will usually not slam us in the face with its most important plot elements in the first pages. A good novel will reveal its important plot elements gradually. This is what Morrowind did and this is what Skyrim did. And it is what Oblivion did not.

Same can be said with a lot of quest/questlines in Skyrim. Poorly written, underwhelming, and overall downright boring.

I didn't want any NPC'S to die.. So I went all over the land trying to find an Oblivion gate so no NPC'S around the area died.
