Daedric Icon-ism in ESO...

Post » Mon Apr 28, 2014 8:21 pm

Looking at the forum avatars in ESO official forums, I noticed a cluster of Daedric icons. I was able to identify most of them till I realized they were in-fact, alphabetical order... Then... I realized there was 17 of them... And Jyggalag instantly crossed my mind, naturally... Then, of course, I started to look for the odd-ball icon, the 17th.

Here are the icons: http://puu.sh/7SWuE Ignore the first three. They got caught in my crop-out...

And, for the oddball... right in between Hircine and Malacath... http://cdn.vanillaforums.com/eso.vanillaforums.com/avatarstock/p9GQAZF96XNWX.png

What letters are between H & M? J, K, and L.

So... Is that icon supposed to represent Jyggalag? Thoughts? I was expecting a more crystal-like symbolism, but it is still a symbol I have not seen before. It has to be Jyggy. Any clues on what the symbol is, or what it represents?

ESO is not that far from the 3rd era... And there's plane-melding going on...

It's an ouroboros encased in crystalline spikes. If that doesn't represent Jyggalag I don't know what does.

Very nice! What's an ouroboros? I could do a google search, but I'd rather ask you for sake of discussion... and because you identified it! :D

An Ouroboros is a snake or dragon eating its own tail. In mythology it represents cyclical eternity along the lines of something re-creating itself.

It's not like we've never seen one in TES before... *raises eyebrow at Akatosh*

More relevant to ESO and Jyggalag, it can also be multiple serpents, each devouring the tail of the next to replace the other(s) before being devoured in turn.

Yeah, we've never seen an Ourboros in TES, let alone in ESO...

The symbols' corresponding Princes are in alphabetical order, so Azura, Boethiah, Clavicus Vile, Hermaeus Mora, Hircine, Jyggalag, Malacath, Mehrunes Dagon, Mephala, Meridia, Molag Bal, Namira, Nocturnal, Peryite, Sanguine, Sheogorath, and Vaermina.

Good to see Scourge has returned as Malacath's signature item. What's up with Vaermina's serpent imagery?

Hircine (stag)

Jyggalag (ouroboros)

Malacath (mace)

Mehrunes Dagon (rising/setting sun)

Mephala (black widow spider)

Meridia (star/shield)

Molag Bal (His Grim Visage)

Namira (bat)

Nocturnal (raven)

Peryite (dragon)

Sanguine (rose)

Sheogorath (The gate to the Fringe)

Vaermina (the snake/mask)

Has anyone come up with any interesting justifications for the serpent imagery?

Not that I know of. It would have to be something new TESO is introducing. Although I am sure some earth culture somewhere has tied snakes to prophetic visions and dreams. Or maybe someone at ESO has ophidiophobia. Drawing a "Prince of Nightmares" concept probably went easily after that.

You mean Mephala? Dark Brotherhood connections acknowledged, I still don't think you'd find a better symbol for the multi-armed Webspinner of six, murder, and secrets than the black widow spider.
