Which emotion would you forgo from your life?

Post » Sat May 03, 2014 11:13 pm

Any emotion; fear, sadness, envy, or maybe even an excess of a generally positive emotion, like excessive maniacal glee :D

Mine would be regret. From time to time i'd get all moody and depressed and start reminiscing about the past (strange but i think i actually like being moody sometimes, yerwot). Then my mind would inevitably stumble upon all the awkward, embarrassing memories in the past, and my bouts of immaturity. I'd think of the stupid, immature things i'd done in the past (with varying degrees of consequence, thankfully most of them are rather harmless) and i'd just cringe at my utter foolishness, even though that was a long time ago.

Idiotic things include stealing my friend's items in some virtual game and lying that I saw someone else hack into the account, spinning a whole goose tale about it, just for my enjoyment. Also an assortment of silly stuff i'd said to my teachers in the past; some of them were unintentionally insulting, while others were just plain stupid/insensitive.

I know its in the past, and I know dwelling on it won't make me feel better about, but I just can't get my mind off it whenever my brain decides to 'relive the memory'. Its infuriating.

Envy. Even though I said it was my favorite emotion in that other thread, it makes me hate my friends and feel depressed. I get very bitter whenever I see someone with something I want, be it specific abilities, praise, attention etc, and considering I see that a lot, it's not a great feeling. It makes me dislike that aspect of myself, but at the same time makes me hate the people around me, which is super upsetting. It hasn't caused anything serious yet, but I get the feeling it'll eventually get me to do something that will make others hate me. Perhaps it's not worth its pluses.

Nah, I'm just kidding about that. While all of that is true, since I discovered how envious I am my life has been twice as interesting. I wouldn't get rid of such an intriguing emotion. But still, for the reasons above, that's the only emotion I'd at least consider forgoing. Aside from anger perhaps, but that's the generic answer.

I'd say nervousness/worry. It's a completely useless tool for me, as instead of hunkering down and studying, or working out whatever the issue is, it just spins me out and it affects my performance during my 6-monthly tests at work. I'm learning to control it, but damn I hate being nervous or worried. I honestly don't know when worry has ever helped me rather than hindered me.

Of all the emotions, I'd have to say regret. All emotions have purpose but, this one usually involves not being able to go back and act the way you wish you had. It's something that could do more damage to a person's mind than anything. Any emotion can damage a person, but regret has to be one of the most damaging.

This, definitely. Most emotions have SOME apparent application--regret or depression might lead you to alter your behavior to avoid it in the future, for example, but nervousness seems to have no function whatsoever other than to impair your ability to complete tasks which you view as important.

Nervousness and worry are rather important emotions. Worry tends to cause you to consider things that you wouldn't normally act accordingly. Who do you think survived when the lion attacked, the one who was constantly worrying about it happening and planned accordingly or the one that never even had the thought cross their mind and was completely unprepared?

They may not be useful in social situations but they do prove useful in survival situations.

Envy as well can be useful. Why would we want to improve our lot in life if we didn't envy something that we didn't have? Not all envy is hateful.

All of them. Perhaps it wouldn't be as fun without happiness, but that's a sacrifice I'd be willing to make. I have too much emotion so being able to suppress them would create a more consistent, stable Renly.

Oh, and regret is useful as well. If we deeply regret that thing we did/didn't do would we be likely to do/not do it next time? What if the thing we regret is not saving that poor man being attacked by that lion? Would we still forgo helping if we saw it again?

So in short I suppose that I'd keep all of my emotions as they all serve a purpose and I doubt I'd feel whole without them. However, I would probably tone down at least one of them.

Getting rid of anxiety would be nice. I don't care that it's sometimes useful, because most of the time it's totally debilitating.

To be honest I think it's a terrible idea to get rid of any of them as all hold purpose

I would argue the two best would be disgust and depression (anxiety or worry or whatever you wanna call it). Confidence is proven to help enhance your standard of living whereas depression can cause more depressing surroundings. Losing disgust would make you more tolerable of all kinds of people, though admittedly sometimes disgust feels warranted. (for example pathological liars disgust me, and I think that's a pretty good type of person to have on your "avoid these people" list. :P )

Why just one? I don't like having any at all. But to be OT, anger. I am capable of it, but I don't allow it to ever take the slightest hold. Over whelming apathy does a good job of preventing anger
