Question about the Star Wars expanded universe...

Post » Sat May 10, 2014 5:59 am

Hey guys! I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan (And Trek) and I have all the movies on bluray etc, but I want to go deeper. I have been hearing about the "expanded universe" lately and apparently there are a lot of un canon novels that the fandom has taken to be canon?

If one were to start looking into these and reading them, which novel would you start off with? How many are there? What are they called? Are they canon? I have so many questions. :(

I'm not much into the Star Wars novels, but I've recently heard that Disney mentioned that only the 2 trilogies and the Clone Wars cartoon are considered "canon". So everything from the books, comics, and video games won't be considered for the new trilogy.

There is a new film coming up (as you already know, if you are a star wars fan). And the novel are simply what Denunci sad, "cartoons". About the games, I think they are creating a new game called Star Wars: Battlefront 3 or just Battlefront for ps3 and/or ps4, xbox and pc. Other then that, I don't anymore info about this "expanded universe".

Also as a huge Star Wars fan, I whished that someone were to make this novels, but not cartoons please...

That's been the case ever since the original Trilogy. George Lucas has always dubbed the additional comics, books, video games, etc. non-canon.

If that is the case, the cartoon alone still makes substantial quanties of EU stuff canon. Mandalorian Death Watch, Dathomiri Nightsisters, Clone Commandos (most notably Delta Squad), and Darth Bane, to name a few, were all pre-existing EU things that got transplanted into the cartoon.

The EU has always been considered non-canon, though some elements have been encorporated into he films, most notable the name Coruscant. Lucas floated the idea of planet wide cit (Though it wasn't an original idea) back in the orginal trilogy, but never named it, Timothy Zahn named it Coruscant in the Thrawn trilogy, the name stuck throughout the EU and beyond and fan pressure encouraged Lucas to stick with Coruscant.

Similarly, I believe the in-universe 501st Legion was named after the real life costuming organization of the same name.

Just go read the Thrawn Trilogy. Go. Right now. Log off this website, shut down the computer, and go read it.
