TES VI Location and Setting Speculation #5

Post » Mon May 12, 2014 9:30 am

As yet Bethesda haven't said anything about the future of the Elder Scrolls series, but one of the most common topics of speculation is where the next game should be set. Rather than trying to keep this in the official suggestion/discussion thread we've decided to give this an official home.
This discussion doesn't need to be tied entirely to geography, other setting details are also appropriate. However let's please keep this focused on the game world and leave other matters, like gameplay mechanics or NPCs, in the other thread.

I still think we're going nowhere, that ESO is taking over.

Why? Care to explain taking into account that they are different style games (MMO vs SP) made by different game studios.

That makes no sense. They can make money with single player TES, why stop making it?
ESO and TES are also made by separate studios, and the single player games are much more popular.

---

I think the next game might be set in Elsweyr. There are some things suggesting this:

1. Changes to Elsweyr geography (Elsweyr mentioned as a land of canyons + forests expanded and hills added in the Anthology map)
2. We have never been to a beast province
3. Elsweyr is the only province left out of ESO (all other provinces have at least one zone)
4. "This is Bethesda marketing" -video (this proves that the next game is set in Elsweyr)
5. There is still the unfilled prophecy in Elsweyr
6. An interesting political situation (Anequina and Pelletine, Dominion)
7. We have never been to a tropical/subtropical province

Khenarti's Roost and half of Reaper's March are parts of Elsweyr.

But yes, it would be interesting (as would any of the southern provinces, really). Not my first choice, I'm not sure if they'd take the plunge and make a game set in a beast province, but if they do, it will bring back the much needed weirdness - and the environments are quite varied and beautiful. I'd love to see the promotional posters, cat protagonists are somewhat... uncommon.

Taking over... hmm, so far it looks like a huge fail. It's one of the worst rated games published by Bethesda (72 Metascore, with all the Bethesda hype machine... and a legendary franchise behind?) and it's probably the most hated mmo ever across the gaming forums even before launch. They haven't published any info about sales or subscribers... which is again fishy given the top class Bethesda marketing machine. Just for reference, Guild Wars 2 announced 2 million pre-orders before launch... Last but not least the 6 months (!!!) delay for the console version.

Somewhat :D
I can already see all the memes.

It seems you're right about Reaper's March, I always just though it to be Valenwood. Khenarti's Roost isn't part of the actual Elsweyr (and it's small) so one could still say that Elsweyr is the province which is left out of ESO more than any other province is left out of ESO.

What I can say about Guild Wars 2 is that it was much more overhyped than ESO.
Does ESO look like a huge fail? No, there have been tons of people online.
But only time will tell how many will keep playing it.

It may not be mainland, but it's still Elsweyr. Sandy beaches, sugar plantations, moon temples, lots of cats - what else do you want? But yeah, it didn't get a full-sized zone. It does feel underrepresented. They could be saving it for something... TES VI or ESO-related, I couldn't say. But Hev had a theory (or rather a wishful thought) that Valenwood's lore is so fleshed out because it's being set up for the next game. It's an option, but on the other hand, it could be a bit of an overload.

It was only the first month. I'm more interested in how many people will resub. I would, but my payment keeps getting declined (take a hint already, ZOS, double charges are suspicious to banks and customers alike), there's no European server in sight and half of nightblade skills are broken. I've got to wonder. If I wasn't such a slow leveler, I'd be taking a break right about now.

Honestly, I really can't imagine a whole game set in just Valenwood. It lacks a certain... something. Maybe it's the cannibalism, or the Green Pact, it just seems that a sequel to Skyrim would need something more. Elsweyr is a hard sell as well. Culturally, it is a much better candidate than Valenwood, but then again, are tha Khajiit something you can really market well? I would combine the two, not only to present a better experience, expand the world and present the two cultures, but also the relationship betweent the two races and cultures.

You have the Bosmer, one of the most unique cultures in all of Tamriel, a race of elves forbidden to harm the forest, or harvest any of its resources. They relly on imported wood for construction and crafting, survive on a diet of meat and cheese and create weapons, armor and clothes mainyl from animals. Then you have the Khajiit, two very unique cultures, a warrior culture, shaped by the harsh conditions of Anequina and a jungle culture, formed around the persuasive power of coin.

These two cultures, not only are they both lacking in some ways in order to present a more complete Elder Scrolls game, but they also bring something unique to the table. I would combine them, as the Thalmor unite them under a common banner. The historic rivalry between the two would be on full display, as would their cultural traits and traditions. The story would foucs on a conflict between them, dark forces which brough them into conflict and several figures, united by a hero to save both from mutual destruction.

ESO will never replace TES for me. It does have some TES skins applied over a generic MMO core, but it's not enough. I'm still playing ESO after the first month and will keep resubbing at least until Witcher 3, it has a certain appeal (in my case main quest, pvp and crafting) but it lacks too much TES core mechanics and soul to actually replace the single player series.
