[Help] Replacing default landscape textures via the CS

Post » Mon May 12, 2014 1:36 am

Hi, is there a straightforward, quick way of replacing an existing landscape texture with a custom one via the CS ? Placing the texture in my textures folder won't do, since I don't want to affect ALL places in the game where it's used.

To be more precise, I am using the mod White Suran by BW & Melchior Dahrk, I like the new appearance of the town a lot, but I would like to replace the ground texture that was left unchanged (Tx_WG_cobblestones_01.dds ?) with a more suitable choice of my own, but I don't want it to affect Balmora too. Not sure if it's doable, but if it can be done, I hope it won't undo the land seams fixes of Slartibartfast.

Landscape tutorials aren't much of help, they all assume you're trying to create terrain from scratch and don't mention how to replace a terrain texture that's used in multiple places with a unique one, just simple swapping, 1 texture for another, no change of placement or anything.

I don't think this can be done. The textures are not attached to a mesh (just the Landscape itself) so they can't be singled out to only appear in one location.

They must be hard-coded into terrain then, too bad, because I could think of many instances where changing the ground textures to better match the architecture would improve the general look of cities and villages and make them more unique.

Well, I'll just settle with customizing meshes and wait for Open MW/Open CS for more extensive texturing options.

If you want to replace terrain texture in just one place, you can always use texture painting (World -> Landscape Editing) to cover the desired area with texture of your choice, you can even add your/new ones.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know you could just paint over default land textures. It took a while, but I did exactly achieve the looks I wanted. There's still a limit of 2 types of land texture for seamless blending, but it's a fairly good compromise.
