First Person RPG's That Don't Require Internet

Post » Thu May 15, 2014 8:33 am

I haven't followed new releases in years so I don't know what's out there. I LOVED the Elder Scrolls series (I played Oblivion for years) but missed out on Skyrim because it requires online connection and I play on a computer that is never online (and that's the way I want to keep it). So... am looking for suggestions on games that have come out in the past half-dozen years or so. My only requirements are...

*First Person RPG*

*Installs and Runs On Completely Offline Computer*

TIA

Morrowind, because it's just as buggy vanilla as it would be if it were fully patched.

Thanks for the reply Lady Renly, but as I mentioned... I'm looking for games released in the past half-dozen years or so. I've played all the Elder Scroll games and absolutely loved them... bugs and all.

Then I am sad to say that I don't think there is any first person rpg that doesn't require internet. I kind think of bunch that are older but nothing recent comes to my mind.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/railboy/frontiers-explore-discover-survive is the only thing that comes to my mind at the moment, and unfortunately it's not even released yet.

There's Dark Messiah of Might and Magic too, I suppose, but it's more like a linear fantasy action game than a RPG. But it got skill points and stuff, and is a pretty fun game.

Not really. It's less buggy when fully patched, but the worst bug you'll even come across no matter what is a bug that is a result of the engine or something. If you don't save really, really often, the game will crash more often. I save at least every five minutes in games that let me, anyways, so it's not a big deal for me.

Arx Fatalis and stuff like Ultima Underworld require absolutely no internet connection. Same goes for Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey on the DS. If you do not have access to a DS, I can't say that last suggestion will be of much help. It just didn't have online anything, anyway.

The first two TES games are good offline games, but not sure if you have DOSbox on that computer. If you do, then go and try them out. If you have a computer that is connected, maybe you can just put DOSbox on a flash drive and import it into your non-connected computer. Ultima Underworld is surprisingly cheap on the PC if you get it off Amazon, but you may want to have DOSbox on your computer before getting it just in case.

Devil Summoner Soul Hackers on the 3DS requires no internet connection, but it's a 3DS game. I don't think you were wanting games on handhelds or consoles to be mentioned. If you have a 3DS, try tracking that game down. Might be a bit tougher to find now due to it not having gotten as much attention as Shin Megami Tensei IV did. The game's a port of an old Sega Saturn game that never got out of Japan until 2013 when it got a 3DS port.

I think Mount & Blade(the first one before Warband came out) can be installed and played without an internet connection, but I can't find any information that says it can. I even checked my copy of it and all this game has in the box is a disk and some cardboard.

There's a ton of these types of games from the 80's and early 90's, but most of them will require DOSbox, so you'll need to use the internet to play a game that doesn't require internet before playing said game... What a strange situation. Not mocking you, this is just something I find interesting when I noticed a lot of what you're looking for would require use of a flash drive to get the correct programs into the correct computer.

Thank you Cryticus, Freddo, and Klawed Flaw. I think you're right, Cryticus... no recent releases of anything I'm looking for.

I've played all the old ones... from Dungeon Master (brilliant game!) to Ravenloft to the MM series (including Dark Messiah) to the Elder Scrolls series and most everything in between (as long as it was first-person). I even hung onto an old P3 computer running Win95 just to be able to go back and play these mentioned, which is what it looks like I'm going to have to do. I have used DOSBox, although it's been a very long time and I'd have to relearn how to work with it.

Thank you all again. Looks like Oblivion was the end for me.

I think you can play Gothic games in first person. Also Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. Very good game.

Completely second Bloodlines. That is one of the most fun RPGs I have played as far as the role play part of role playing goes. The world can svck you in(maybe bite your neck if you want to stick with the vampire theme) at times just because of how well it gets you into the world. Might want to find a way to put the unofficial patch Wesp made for it onto a flash drive first, though. The game was rushed and ended up having an overly buggy release as a result. It is a great game once it begins to be playable, though.

Yeah, you can put the patch onto a flash drive. Have fun. Make sure to use the plus version of this patch so you can have all the features the game was intended to have restored.

If you haven't played Deus Ex, this one is pretty much recommended. I would recommend System Shock 2, but that game is absurdly expensive to get on disk. GOG is a good service to use if you want to have DRM free games. Pretty sure you could put the games you buy off there onto some sort of storage device or disk and run it on your preferred computer. Some games might require DVD-R's, but it's worth it if you want to have a cheaper way of getting all these old games.
