Because they are for the SNES.... you will end up spending around $100+ for them.

Most of the older Shin Megami Tensei games will be fairly expensive, too. Especially the first Persona on the PS1. There's a PSP remake of that and is probably the better one to get. The English localization of Revelations Persona on the PS1 had tons of attempts at making the game seem like it took place in America despite the fact that tons of Japanese references were kept intact.

Nearly every character got a race change, too. Not sure why that was needed, but guess Atlus thought the game would be considered unrealistic if everyone was Caucasian.

Yup Persona for playstation would go around $80...

And I just found out that Mega Man Legends series were JRPGs of some form... which means I have to locate copies.

I prefer RPGs where my character is bigger than my sword.

Harvest Moon is a farm simulation game that isn't a serious one. It does have large amounts of RPG elements in Harvest Moon DS, though.

Golden Sun.

Either start with Golden Sun and move to Golden Sun: The Lost Age once you beat the first one, or go into Dark Dawn without playing the first two. The first two are for GBA and the third is for DS. You don't need to play the first two to follow the story of the third, though it will help you squeel when some characters appear.

I know you're only parroting obvious stereotypes, but.... honestly, I've played any number of JRPGs with reasonably-sized weapons. /shrug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
(and Western action games with ludicrous weapons /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />)

I heard it was possible for the Buster Sword from FF7 to be used as a weapon in real life. It would probably just be less awkward to use than a pistol sword. The Gunblade may not have been intentionally based on an actual weapon used in the American Civil War, but the pistol sword was a weapon used for a period of time. Most users hated the thing for how awkward it was to use.

So seems one of the more modern Final Fantasy game stayed fairly true to how awkward those things were by making it a specialty weapon. I wouldn't be surprised if the idea for the Gunblade came from finding out Bayonets were not the only guns with blades on them.

I think Shadow Hearts may have had slightly more reasonable sword sizes. Kind of funny how JRPGs are known for their big swords. Almost seems like many forget most RPGs all the way back to D&D had weird weapons. Heck, the first Ultima had a Phaser despite being a sort of high fantasy game. Until you find that you also were piloting spaceships in one of the first three games, and the Hoe of Destruction from Ultima 7.

Lol your really missing out Western RPGs would be nothing without taking certain aspects that JRPGs do. Trust me, one day you'll find a JRPG that just..speaks to you and you'll fall in love with the genre. FF6 was the game that did it for me.

The buster sword is probably actually based on the glaive, only with the haft cut down to sword length (instead of a polearm) and with exaggerated blade proportions. Just another example of Japanese fascination with "exotic" Western weapons, repurposed for their fantasy settings - similar to how the katana is over-used in many western fantasy settings for its exotic value (which, of course, has now made it entirely mundane and cliche.) But the key word here is fantasy: it's not meant to be realistic, or barely even plausible. Its size is what makes it so different to what you'd expect from a sword, especially given that Cloud is not exactly a huge character (Barrett wielding a buster sword = normal; Cloud wielding a buster sword = special.)
