Programs that let you "train" or modify your character (in games that have characters with skills/stats/perks/etc). Can be a stand-alone save file editing tool, or a mod that adds functions to the actual game. (Or, in games like Oblivion & Skyrim, a mod that adds a building full of things you can easily skill up off of.)

edit: ah, which reminds me of another minor "cheat" I've done - I'm a massive loot hoarder, especially in Diablo-style games. So when I wanted to make some item mules in TitanQuest, I used a character editor to give those lv1 mules maxed out bags & bank space. Didn't do a thing to the actual characters I was playing with, though.

1 playthrough normally and then one the second or others I'll do as I please.

In the new GTA I cheated when I was just playing around but never realised the auto save was on and that kinda annoyed me.

A trainer is a small program that runs alongside the game it's made for and allows you to activate or deactivate various cheats with the press of a button. I get my trainers from http://www.cheathappens.com/ This site provides the best trainers on release day (usually) and updates with every patch, but you need a subscription to get the trainer for the latest patch version of a game.

Well, to be honest, most of my gaming time was what I think you could call powergaming fused with glitches and cheats and such.

Kind of ruined the games, since it meant that in the subsequent replays, I could find excuses for my character to "happen by" certain items or NPCs or manipulate the game to make most of it or to get it to go how I wanted it to go. It also ruined the fun and mystique of exploring and accomplishments didn't feel so pure even on fairly fair play through.

I cheat pretty often in single player if possible. I don't do it unless I am bored. I do cheat when playing Doom WADs, though. Mostly because people like to make maps that are far harder than the ones in the unmodded game(s). I used to cheat in Morrowind for swimming around reasons, but that character now has a water breathing necklace. I cheat in old PS2 racing and driving games all the time because I am terrible at them. I'll just find a code to unlock everything for this reason.

Luckily, I do not play these kinds of games much.

Star Wars Battlefront 2. I used all the God cheats on that, single player of course.

There was also a cool cheat in Vegas 2 (RIP Tom Clancy) that let you have Third person view instead of first person view. I stopped using it because I got Live, and didn't feel like getting Banned.
