[REQ] Bypassing the Civil War 101

Post » Sun May 18, 2014 8:26 am

So, let's face it: after doing the Civil War time and again, you're bored of it. And you know that the truce you made out of Season Unending won't work.

Well, here's the idea: You allow the Civil War questline to end instantly by killing one of the leaders.

The average joe with Imperial leanings can proceed in two ways.

1. Assuming the Imperial supporter is in the Dark Brotherhood, after killing the Emperor, you can drop a axe by his body, thus giving the blame to the Stormcloaks. In retaliation, the Legion troopers present will directly attack Windhelm and win.

2. If he doesn't feel like it, he might as well make the ritual to get the Emperor assassinated. But, in order to success, you'll need a axe to give to the assassin.

While the Stormcloak ultranationalist might have it easier, it's the only way, unfortunately. What he needs to do? Infiltrate the Palace of the Kings, kill Ulfric in his sleep, drop a Imperial sword and watch as the rebels automatically win the Civil War.

Simple as that.

I've always thought there should be an option to use Ulfric's Thalmor dossier to discredit him. Or even just show it to Tullius to show how much the Thalmor are enjoying the conflict and let him find an excuse to maintain the truce indefinitely.

What do you mean "the truce you made out of Season Unending won't work."? I've never done the civil war quest-line, but absolutely finished the main quest.

Well, is it possible to fail Season Unending? Because I'm sure some people out there are making sure to make it fail on purpose.

I believe if you've already chosen a side (as in finished the initiation quest) then you have to finish the civil war before being able to have the peace conference. It's a silly set-up.

I doubt it. The quest can be done as long as both sides have at least two holds in their control.

I did the peace conference prior to ending the civil war. I ended it after I killed Alduin.

Frankly? Sometimes I wish the war would continue on without my interference. Like, maybe my actions have a slight impact (if I end up randomly killing Stormcloaks or Legionnaires or somesuch), but if I don't join then a contested hold has a chance to flip to the other side every X days (and maybe even spawn a big battle if I happen to be there).

Heck, if that happened, I might even feel compelled to join a side on my current character! Through happenstance, my current PC finds both sides repugnant, and does his best to stay out of any conflicts between them. If Morthal was actually in danger, however, he might feel compelled to come to the aid of his close friend Idgrod Ravencrone.

Coming back to the scenario in the OP... I think either side would crumble with the loss of their leader, not the other way around. Sure, without Ulfric, the Stormcloaks would dig their heels into the sand, but Tullius seems like the sort of strategist who could take advantage of an army that had lost its cool. And we already know from the situation before the general's arrival that the Empire can't hold Skyrim without Tullius' leadership.

This is exactly how I feel about it. Why bother, the war means nothing and doesn't even take place without the character's involvement.

This is where Immersive Patrols comes in to play. Awesome mod but doesn't solve the problem of the so-called war feeling pointless.
