What Skyrim needs: A perk menu overhaul

Post » Sun May 18, 2014 4:28 am

Skyrim's perk menu may be visually stunning but it's a terrible menu. I think a mod that overhauls it is long overdue. SkyUI probably never will do that because schlangster is taking a well-deserved break from modding. But someone has to do it eventually, since that menu is so terrible whether you're using a mouse and keyboard, or controller.

I'm not very creative, so I can't really think of what it would look like if it actually was well-designed, or else I would try to make some sort of mockup. But I can link to http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/EricSchwarz/20111114/8890/User_Interface_anolysis_Skyrim.php who does a pretty good job of listing just what exactly is wrong with it. I think, maybe it is still possible to redesign the perk menu while keeping the aesthetic aspect. Like if the constellation was in the background and moved around as you selected different things, but it wouldn't be the actual interface.

Well, if someone ever makes such a mod I'd like there to be some room for compatibility with mods that add extra attributes.

I couldn't agree more. I like the rest of Skyrim's menu design but the perk menu has to be the most horribly-designed interface in the history of video gaming. I can't count the number of times a slightly misplaced mouse click has zoomed me over to a different perk tree I didn't want to be in. *shudders*

besides the layout, the most disappointing thing for me is the limited number of perks you can get.

in fallout some of my favorite mods were adding in a ton of perks. afaik, this isn't possible in skyim, last i heard you still could only replace existing ones.

It's definitely possible to add new perks. SkyRe and some other mods do it. It even changes the number of perks you get per level.

What we REALLY need is a way to add perk tree's. I know it's pretty much impossible with what tools we have with the engine, but I can dream.

That list is extremely poor. Some of the things aren't even true, he apparently has a problem with the entire concept of scrollbars, and the only legitimate complaint is that it can be hard to navigate with the mouse (but is trivial once you understand how it works).

I think the menu itself is great. The only problem is how you control it.

Easy fix would be to make mouse clicks only move you around the constellation you currently have selected.

Pressing direction keys should be the only way to move between trees when you are zoomed in on one.

Overhauling the Skills Menu would be really hard, as:
1.) The most important parts of it are coded in Skyrim.exe (the positioning of the perk, the selection and navigation system, the number of skills, basically everything, besides the top- and the bottom-bar, NOTE: the LevelUp box is a completely another menu!)
2.) Making these systems, that are defined in the Skyrim.exe would be REALLY hard to code in actionscript, not even to mention the hassle to get a dynamic menu, like that made in flash...

There is a thing, that would be even close to impossible:
---Reading the position of the perks from either the .esm or .esp files.

I guess some reverse engineering would have to be done, then. That would be really hard, I don't even know how you would even start doing that. So there would be have to be one or more extremely dedicated people doing this. I hope such people exist because I think this is worth it.

I've done some brainstorming on what a perk menu overhaul would need at the minimum:

  1. Every skill visible at once.
  2. Every perk in a skill tree visible at once.
  3. Ability to work with mods that change the perks or skills themselves like SkyRe does.
  4. Support for plugins which add extra information, because otherwise mods which attempted to add this to the menu would be incompatible.

I still can't think about what it would look like, though. Someone should make a mockup if they have any ideas.
