It's the same on 360. My character wanted to mostly use the familiar. Not so. The wolf, when summoned, pauses and is supposed to do a long howl, before diving into battle. Now that howl is silent. It's a crying shame, because this guy moves pretty fast and does some serious asskicking, at least as far as I've seen, against the enemies I set him on, like bears.... /bonk.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':bonk:' /> *shudders, starts crying*

If you summon the familiar, then sneak into a situation, when he is next to you, you can hear him growling, and you can hear the love for blood in his growl. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

If I can hear his growl Bethesda, Y U NO CAN FIX HOWL?

Just in case anyone didn't get my joke the video is from a game called Red Dead Redemption which has cougars that seem to leap at you from out of nowhere without making a sound.

Damn cougars.

On my legendary playthrough character, that I was playing on last night, I heard some screeches. I was like, what in the world is that noise? So I walked closer and closer, and it grew louder. I then saw what was causing it. Two spriggans had taken over 4 elk. I have never seen that before. Ever.

I hope they keep it, A wolf should not let you know it is about to attack, neither should a bear or a sabre cat.

You see a wolf and it attacks you it still should not howl, maybe off in the distance it should howl but not as it is about to attack you.

As others have mentioned, it's definitely Dawnguard that causes this. I remember testing it a while back. Saved near some wolves, uninstalled Dawnguard, and they'd do the animation and howl when I got close. Re-installed Dawnguard and they'd do the howling animation, but they'd be mute. Maybe Bethesda accidentally messed it up while working on the new Werewolf-oriented stuff? I dunno.

I think they still howl in the distance but maybe this was stopped when they are within a certain radius of the player so there is a chance they can surprise attack rather than be slain straight away. I have dawnguard on xbox so will check for sure tonight.

Nah, the sound file just doesn't seem to trigger properly with Dawnguard installed regardless of your proximity to the wolves. You can be right next to them and they'll still go into their howling animation like they did before, just without any noise, so it doesn't seem to be intentional.

Well, I thought the howl was deliberately removed with the first DLC because it sounded pretty bad - kinda like some guy hiding in the bushes trying to scare his little brother... (Another reason not to use unofficial patches).
