Skyrim always wants to CTD for me(?)

Post » Sun May 18, 2014 1:58 pm

Hi, ever since I got skyrim (April 2012) I've had ctd problems. On both my computers, I don't know if it's mods that are causing it or why it's happening. It happens randomly when I fast travel, load new cells, quicksave, quickload and even sometimes when I run around in the wilds.

I would really appreciate if anyone could take a look at my mods list and see if anything is wrong. These are the mods that I'm using

I have run BOSS and I have 0 errors :/

I recommend getting and running BOSS if you haven't already. It'll sort out your load order which might completely fix the problem.

How frequently is Skyrim crashing? Did you turn autosaving off? I am not sure if it is as big a pain on the PC as it is on the consoles, but that is the number one reason for bringing the game to a halt, even on a console. The second problem is a mystery, but on the consoles it will just freeze (crash/snuff it) occasionally for no apparent reason, which does get more frequent the bigger the save file. Unless the USKP fixed that bug there is nothing you can do about it. My PC game only crashed once, and I caused it playing around with mods and then uninstalling one without going back to a previous save without that mod.

You do not have any autosaving still on?

Are you careful to go back to a previous save when you disable any of the mods, or are you continuing to play after it has given you the warning that save is missing content? The only time I ever crashed the game that was it. I was only testing mods to see what they were like so was not fussed a minor script change was missing, I had no intentions of keeping any saves made, 40 minutes later the game crashed.

If Boss found nothing wrong with the load order or mods, are you keeping an eye on the temperatures inside the PC, maybe something is overheating? Were there any unrecognized mods in your load order? Maybe give them a clean in case there is a problem. I am not that experienced at modding unfortunately, sorry I could not be more helpful.

The reason I got random ctd's and freezes was because I had been adding mods and removing mods into my game any time I felt like it. Random, unrelated ctd and freezes began to happen. But when I started a new game with the exact same mods and same load order, the game was stable. Stable, as in I've had 15 or more full game sessions and the only problem was one single loading hang in Saarthal, which I can only assume was the engine's fault and that it could happen to everyone.

So now, before I add any mod or set of mods, I create a new save so that I can fall back on it if they cause a ctd, freeze, or some other problem. So the pre-mod save is like a military checkpoint for mods.

Here is my current stable load order:

Try turning off the high definition packs. For some reason, they just completely mess with computers. If you're using them and you experience any frequent crashes, try turning them off first.

That being said, this IS a bethesda game. And while Skyrim is the least crash-happy since Arena, its still pretty crashy. If yuo do much alt-tabbing, that'll cause it too

My Skyrim rarely if ever crashes and I use 50+ mods. I do agree the high def packs are really unstable and should be avoided unless you have a video card with 2 MB or more ram. Also avoid using multiple mods that change alot of the core game as they will conflict.

If all else suggested above fails try removing this mod. I know Convenient Horses does wonders for a lot of people. But when I added it I started getting frequent CTDs and eventually a corrupted save. The problems persisted even on new characters. How long ago did you add it? If fairly recent it may be the problem.

The last video card with 2mb ram I used was http://translate.google.de/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amoretro.de%2F2012%2F05%2Fmatrox-mystique-2mb-sgram-pci.html back in 1996. :D

I have 53 active mods Sir all lined up and quacking.

A Geforce 760 overclocked by 51% with a desk fan constantly flushing the cabinet with cool air. Switched on once the card has had chance to run hot for 30 or so minutes.

If I play for more than 5 hours at a time, or 4 hrs 37 minutes, I will get a freeze. Occasionally a full CTD.

If you've Boss'd your mods about then you should be good to go. Do you have any mods requiring compatibility patches? Does your Boss Log ask for them?

Look them up and install them. Then re-run Boss.

If that doesn't work, then post you system spec here.

Likely it's the GPU, as the port to PC from Console is GPU-heavy. Else, more likely, your Graphics Card.

A good one to check is your power ratio. Does your stack's power supply (PSU) provide enough power to all your board(s) and card(s)?

You'll be struggling at less than 500w Sir with a suitable powerful Graphics card

Singing at 750w.

This makes me a bit nervous since I've experienced occasional CTD's lately, and I installed Convenient Horses not long ago. The corrupted save, do you mean that you had just one save and wrote it over each time you saved, or did you always save in new slots and the game still got corrupted?

To the OP, another mod that has been known to cause problems for some is ApachiiHair.

The problem isn''t bugs, the problem is you are adding mods which ask for more resources than your system can provide. I have run the high resolution texture packs from the day they came out with 1gb of VRam without problems. I had a very stable system until I added Skytest and Birds of Skyrim. Then I started getting frequent crashes, especially near Lakeview manor. Try using the Lite Version of Skytest which just changes the AI, it doesn't try to spawn more animals. I disabled those two mods and haven't had any crash or freeze in a month now (I loved both mods, but my system didn't like them). I only run into stablility problems when I add mods which spawn a lot of new actors, or mods which are very script heavy. When you start adding multiple mods which are demanding of system resources you can run into problems. Any mod which messes with spawn points, especially near the Hearthfire homes is a potential source of crashing. It's tedious to do, but the best way to find which mod is causing you problems is to start a new game with only the Bethesda DLC's enabled, then add the mods you like one by one and play them a while. You will eventually find the straw that broke your camel's back.

Always save in new slots + quicksaves never used autosaves. Eventually the crashes got more frequent then the character could never be loaded on any saves made with Convenient Horses. And as I got it at the start well it completely killed the character. Hopefully you have a save prior to installing the Mod. I did not.

Have you been running the very same mod list, or the same character, since April 2012? If the modlist (and of course save size) was shorter in 4/2012 but you were having crashes then, it could be more of a PC system based problem

Or If it's that you've always played with that list and played for a while now: What happens when you start a new game, and run it with some but not all of the mods you list? Less crashing or same?

There is nothing wrong with Convenient Horses. I've been using it for months. No need for concern.

@OP

If you really want to get to the bottom of this, can you replace your load order with a BOSS log (with the messages)? Include the list of plugins not recognized by BOSS if one is generated. Please enclose them in spoiler tags so they won't clutter the screen. Also answer the following:

- describe your CTDs in greater detail. Where/How frequent/what were you doing. Anything that may indicate a 'pattern' which will help narrow down the culprit.

- have you made tweaks to your game ini files?

- you system specs?

- list any mods that do not come with plugins and would not show up on a BOSS log, such as texture or body replacers.

try posting this in the hardware/software issues thread as well, they are just as likely (probably even more likely) to be able to help you solve your problem there.
