Mage Type Help

Post » Thu May 29, 2014 1:09 pm

So Ik that this thread comes up a lot but this is more personal I guess would be the word. I am making a new char that is going to be pure mage and (even though I have played since launch) the possibilities are really overwhelming. I dont know if I should do all schools, or just specialize in one or two. Comment your favorite or a mage style that you think would be fun to play.
His characteristics are that he is a nord, but is in love with magic. He is kinda righteous, but isn't afraid to kill to get what he wants (within reason of course). He is also going to be gay, but that doesn't really factor in to what he plays as.

Necromancer is my personaly favorite mage type but ONLY if you are using Skyrim Redone which actually makes it possible.

Best of luck with your playthrough. Unfortunately I cant really help you with your gay Nord who's completely na?ve in the way of magic, but best of luck anyway.

A couple of suggestions

Illusion mage - Illusion is great for stopping enemies in their tracks with Calm spells. You can also make them fight among themselves with Frenzy spells. Muffle spell, Silent Casting Perk, and Invisible spell allow you to sneak at will. Illusion is very powerful.

Restoration mage - my next character will be a Restoration mage that hates/fears the undead. He won't soul trap living souls, but believes that soul trapping an undead creature sets them free. A good character for Dawnguard, I think. He'll definitely be exploring all the ruins he comes across, and will make money selling Turn Undead daggers and maces.

Alteration swordsman - no armor, no robes, just a sword and an Alteration spell (Oakflesh, Stoneflesh, etc...). At higher levels you can cast the Paralyze spell.

p.s. - check out classes from the Oblivion and Morrowind wikis. You may find inspiration in Nightblade, Spellsword, Healer, etc....

Going to try to be some help here. Magic is a varied discipline, while it's tempting to go for everything, that may not be the best idea. However, there is a lot of room for diversity so don't feel like you absolutely need to stick to a certain strict path. The strategy people find the most effective is the Illusion-Conjouration mix, though that may not be what you to do. Like most have said on here, Destruction is kind of weak compared to the other damage-dealing skills, so make sure to have escape plans and to know how to use all the tricks up your sleeve. And of course it should go without saying to invest in Magicka at level-ups, though an exact amount is something I can't give.

I would be a well rounded mage and practice each school as each school has something to offer.
That being said, conjuration amd illusion are the absolute strongest skills when it comes to magic.

Try to be more defensive as a mage because in vanilla skyrim magic is quite slow to progress, so defense is your best offense

For some reason, I feel elemental magic (i.e. Destruction) would appeal most to a Nord, what with all the fire, storm, and thunder. Illusion and Conjuration are too indirect, and Restoration is for milk-drinkers. Though, if you see Nords as reflections of historical Norse, necromancy by way of Conjuration might be appropriate as well (Odin and Freya were psychopomps after all).

As for the gay part, all I can say is that Marcurio strikes me as the codependent type. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.
