Looking to make my first mod, Advice?

Hey guys first of sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I am looking to make my first mod, I want to create a custom armor I am looking to make the Armor worn by http://static.wixstatic.com/media/9ac8db_7f719fa761f149919900d39caa6108b6.jpg_srz_608_311_85_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz lady. I want to make it because I love the armor and style and she is my favorite character from the show she is from, RWBY by Roosterteeth (Don't hat on me for liking the show!!! lol) and to be honest making my own mod as oppose to just using other peoples mods and giving back to the community would be awesome.

I have started the first process of actually getting the body parts into blender and but that is all I have done so far, I havent deleted the skeletons yet (The guide im following tells me i need to this if its worn please correct me!)

I was looking for some general tips really to making my own armor. And if you think im crazy for trying something like this as a first mod? Tell me, Im still gonna attempt it anyway I like a challenge.

Any tips or guidance welcomed with open arms, I am planning to start fully this weekend it was hard enough to try and get blender to accept nif files.

Thank you for any responses

i think its pretty straightforward. Just focus on modeling it first, try not to go over 12k polys. It may not look "clean" or perfect, but that's what textures are for.

i would drop the sash closer to the body, b/c it won't be swaying in the wind, unless you make an animation for it. That is possible but fairly advanced.

Then weight paint your new mesh to the body you imported. There are a number of weight painting tutorials on youtube for skyrim and in general for skyrim.

Then getting it into game would be the last step and may be the biggest headache if you haven't done anything like that before.

But you can get help with that in the Creation Kit forum.

I would just use a one sided plane to model the clothing, you can force double sided for the textures, so you don't have to make it look like a real piece of clothing, ie with two sides. Just make sure it fits snug against the body.

TES Alliance has some good tutorials, you should check it out.

i dont mean to get wordy, but i'd probably start out with a cylinder primitive, then just push and pull the vertices until its nice and snug around the body. Maybe a cylinder with 12 sides. It may clip into the body at some points, but don't worry about it. Then subdivide it once or add edges/edge loops as you see fit to make it conform as well as you can.

Start with the chest. then model the belt and sash seperately. then end on the legs and feet. Break it up as much as possible. it doesn't need to be all one mesh when you're just modeling at first, you can attach them together later if you need to.
