the Fishing Pool (Any Fishermen here?)

Post » Sun Jun 01, 2014 2:30 pm

any other of my fellow posters here a fan of Fishing?

I have been a Fishermen ever since I was in grade School, and as I am currently in Between jobs (and considering returning to UNB to finish my History Degree i never entirely finished), I am going to be doing a lot of Fishing this year..

Fishing season started awhile ago, the Water Levels have finally dropped enough from the Spring Flooding to make fishing Viable.. I am planning a week long fishing trip with a few friends at my old Cottage my grandfather left me, it has a nice Trout Pool and a Salmon Pool close by (granted, its not quite salmon season yet).. its a great place to "rough it" for a week as we have No electricity..

my biggest catch last year was a Rainbow trout.. about 6lbs IIRC.. nothing that Fantastic, but It gave me quite a fight for a fish its size!

Any other Fishermen here? tell me about some of your fishing trips, or share your favorite Fishing spot

I have been meaning to go fishing for some time now. Haven't been since I was a kid. Gotta find a good spot first, the river (read: creek) near my house is pretty much panned out. Any general advice for someone looking to get back into it?

well, first you need to decide what type of Fish you are Fishing for, and how large the average fish is in the location you are going.. this way, you will know what strength of line you should buy...

Now, if you decide to go Trout Fishing, I will give you one of my "Trade Secrets" I always use when Fishing For Rainbow Trout near the Cottage:

If you find the worm you have on the end of your hook isn't quite attracting the trout, but you know there are Trout around the stretch of water your casting into, throw a Cheezie on the end of the line as bait!

it sounds insane I know, but in my experience the Trout go crazy for it!

another tip, I find the best time to Fish is around the 3:45pm-5:30pm time frame, as that seems to be when fish are the most hungry!

Really? I thought it was generally accepted that the early morning was the best time?

Doesn't sound insane at all. If we're all addicted to cheesy processed foods, why wouldn't the fish like 'em? :D Does it work only for trout or have you caught other kinds with it? Don't know what species we've got around here, gonna have to do some research.

My dad started guiding fishing trips when he was in 8th grade as way to suport his family. We spent many hours on the water, and learned to value a coffee can  Never more fancy than a rowboat with a 5hp motor. Now I help teach " http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/anglereducation/ " for a summer school class. And my kiddos love to fish as well.

Best memories:

  • Catchign the white bass run on the Wolf River in WI. After a few years of noting, we finially hit it with a fish every cast.
  • Watching my high school girlfriend, who never fished much, reel in a bluegill and get splashed as a northern pike stole it right at the boat
  • Getting some R&R in Panama and going with a local on Lake Gatun for peacock bass. Just droplining over the boat and not understanding the language. Soem local working as KP deep fried it and made a great salso for it. Fresh fish after a month of MRE's and T-Rats was a good thing and mde for a happy platoon.
  • Having a kid get upset that his uber real broke and couldn't fish during fishing class. Wrapped some line around a beer bottle that we found, and he brought in the biggest fish of the day

Yeah, I like fishing. Haven't done it in 10 years but I'll get to it eventually.

Fishing is pretty cool, but I don't want to be associated with the fishing community so I don't do it.

I usually fish every weekend if I'm off. We live really close to a creek that's mainly populated with brim (is that how you spell it), hornyheads, bullhead catfish (don't know the specific type of bullhead), svckers, largemouth bass, rock bass and some shad. I never really go anywhere else to fish so I never really catch anything huge. Unfortunately, the fish this year seem to be less numerous and smaller than this time last year. I'd love to spend more time learning the true names of the fish and not just the names they are called around here.
