Are you a Blu-Ray elitist?

A lot of people I know (myself included, and I'm not really ashamed to admit it) are what I like to call "blu ray elitist", meaning that every form of video you own must be in blu ray format, or you just wait or don't purchase it.

When I go to the store, and I want to buy a new film that just came out, or even an old one, I immedietely go for the Blu-ray, there is no alternative, no question. I have a 55 inch LED TV by Sharp, and it's very very nice. Watching a dvd on that thing just feels..wrong. The picture, number one, is so grainy. It's also stretched to the point of just looking bad. A blu ray, however, is so crisp and neat, it's formatted so clearly, the pictures are more vivid, and the resolution is so much better.

Now, for me, owning something means I like to take care of it. I like to have nice things. So I'll spend the 3-5 dollars more to own something on Blu-ray, and for me, there is no exception. I haven't bought a DVD format film in..5 years? I just don't. There's no point to, I have a Blu-ray player, which offers an exceptionally better experience, therefore I buy Blu-rays only.

Now, I know there are some people who claim blu ray is no different than a dvd, and I honestly laugh at that. I own the dvd and blu ray version of a few films, and watching them one after the other, the difference is staggering.

So, are YOU a blu-ray elitist?

But what about all the amazing films not on Blu Ray yet? (Or not even on DVD yet.)
I can appreciate that you prefer Blu Ray, but I would never restrict my appreciation from any art/media just because it wasn't "state of the art."

I still watch lesser quality films and TV shows, and listen to old scratchy vinyl, because sometimes that's the only form they exist in. But I'm an art enthusiast, not a technology elitist as you define it. ;)

Considering I just gained access to a Blu-Ray player in the form of my PS3, no, I'm not a Blu-Ray Elitist at all. I don't own a single one, and probably won't honestly, at least until I can go out and buy a Blu-Ray player for like $20 from Wal-Mart.

Err, not really no. They're more expensive, and the quality jump isn't big enough in my opinion to be worth the extra cash.

I'm sorry but I just have to disagree with that.

Go on youtube, and watch a video in 480. Now watch it in 1080 HD quality. That's literally the difference of a blu-ray and dvd. If you can't notice a substantial difference, well, that's fine that it doesn't bother you, but to refute it exists is just..wrong.

Also, I didn't say I don't own dvds, I own a lot, probably 100 or more, the classics that can not be bought on blu ray for instance. But when there IS a choice, I *always* go blu-ray. Because the difference is huge.

I'm with you on this one. I've watched DVDs and Blu-Rays on my best friends 52" 1080p TV, and there was just not enough of a difference to warrant spending the extra cash.

I haven't seen a big difference. Maybe my TV isn't good enough, I don't know. But those youtube videos of blueray dvd comparison I've seen show DVD with absolutely horrible pixels, not at all what you actually see from your TV. I wouldn't trust what you see on youtube. I would, however, trust my own eye.

No, not at all. There are many great movies that aren't available on blu-ray. And I still buy movies now and then that aren't available on blu-ray. Infact, I ordered a movie from 1984 on DVD yesterday which isn't available on blu-ray.

I do buy blu-ray whenever possible though as they tend to have the same price as DVDs these days (especially if the movie been out for a couple of months). But even so, to be honest, I don't find the quality jump to that important. I have a few older movies on blu-ray and DVD where the main difference seem to be the resolution of the subtitles rather than the movie itself  Always see a major difference in animated movies though, where you see every drawn line clearly. Those blu-ray movies are very much worth it I think, and I do look forward for Disney's The Sword in the Stone from 1963 to be released on blu-ray here in Sweden later this year.

Heh, I've been thinking about http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/BIXA-9001 since it's my favorite childhood anime, but considering I already have it on DVD which I paid less than 1/10th as much for, it's not really worth it

I don't have a HD TV so I'm not sure I'd benefit from the quality jump, and I'm only interested in special features of very few movies, so DVD for me.
