The New Helgen (RP int checksign upOOC)

Post » Mon Jun 09, 2014 7:38 am

In the years following the defeat of Alduin at the hands of the Dragonborn, Skyrim settled back to the way it had been.

The civil war lost, the Stormcloaks mostly went into hiding, striking out from caves to attack Imperial supply wagons and the like, but otherwise posting very little threat. To further discourage any ideas to attempt another rebellion, General Tullius sent word back to the Imperial city requesting extra troops. Once these troops had cleared the bandits, necromancers and various other nefarious types from the forts scattered around the country, they set up permanent garrisons and the Legion maintains a much larger presence in Skyrim.

With the increased Imperial presence however, came the problem of keeping another ten thousand soldiers fed and clothed. The supply lines between Cyrodiil and Skyrim were far from ideal before the dragon crisis and the civil war, but after, with bandits and Stormcloak remnants attacking almost every caravan, it became almost impossible. With the soldiers literally starving in their forts the Emperor and Jarl Siddgeir of Falkreath arranged to have the destroyed town of Helgen rebuilt. With the ruins being located on a main supply route into the country, it was reasoned that a rebuild Helgen would make life better for all of Skyrim, not only for getting supplies to the forts, but for shipping in all sorts of goods and luxuries from the southern countries. That decided, Siddgeir sent word all across Skyrim that the town was to be rebuilt.

The Companions were the first to respond to the call, sending men to the shattered city in order to remove the bandits infesting the ruins and then guarding them while the masons and builders began the slow process of repairing Helgen. This slow process was sped up somewhat with the arrival of a small detachment of mages from the College of Winterhold, using their magics they made cutting and shaping the massive rocks needed for repairing the town's towers seem easy. A Khajiit trade caravan set up inside the city walls, keeping the men and women fed and warm, and for a price also chemically entertained with Skooma.

Now it is standing once more Helgen has surpassed it's former glory and boasts an inn, blacksmith and several other traders as well as a well supplied town defense force. All is not well though, there are rumors of a Dark Brotherhood sanctuary hidden in the woods nearby, of thieve's guild fences operating out of the town's inn and perhaps most worrying of all, of a plot to remove Siddgeir and replace him with a Jarl who is respected by his peers and to replace Falkreath with Helgen as the hold capital.

So, this is a pretty rushed intro to the RP idea I have, I'll expand on it more when I get home later. But is anyone interested so far? It will be mostly set in Helgen, with our characters being the residents of the new town. Hopefully we'll get to have plenty of action, plotting, intrigue and maybe even a little backstabbing too. Questions?

Sounds like Valton, an existing new town RP which hasn't been active in.. I don't know how long.

Rather than starting fresh, it might be worth looking into resurrecting Valton, if there's interest.

Of course, if you can find enough RP:ers for this helgen town it might be worth it, but Valton does have a ton of existing stuff on it which could potentially be resurrected quite easily with enough fresh players. A fresh batch of GM's to give it a new face, perhaps? Or a mix of old and new? Idk. Really not sure if people are interested in bringing Valton back to life.

Since the 17th of December, going by the OOC thread.

I really think a benign/ slow-paced RP would be a great thing for us to work on (I'll admit, after watching GOT S4E8, I've been kind of adverse to violence (and I knew it was coming)). Especially since we could focus more on character rather than plot, and draw in some of the things we've been discussing in the 'Make TES unique Thread' through having Mage and Priest and Laity/regular joe characters.

I don't know how many inactive RP'ers were originally on board for Valton, however I think logistically it's better if we start fresh. We could keep the name of Valton, so you can re-attract those inactive RP'ers - say the new residents thought Helgen was an unlucky name and it needed a change, or that the person heading the rebuild is called Valton (more lore friendly that way than seceding a hold to a prosperous merchant without a huge war). I, for one, would love to get on board with that, and perhaps help get the RP of the groung in collaboration with the two of you.

Nah, if you're starting fresh with Helgen then we don't need to connect it in any way to Valton in terms of name. Indeed, new Helgen would happen a few months, if not a year, after Valton's timeline, but Valton could still exists in the same universe if that's desired. Which means, those characters in Valton could've found their way to new Helgen if their business dried out in Valton.

Now that I think of it... Having both Valton and New Helgen at the same time would be kind of neat. You'd get that city-to-city trading going, if you have enough players. Might be worth looking into, if New Helgen does grab the attention of enough RPers. As a starting point though, if you wish to start fresh, then going with the name the OP suggests is better, as it leaves the existing Valton-threads unrelated to it, and possibly makes the co-existance of the two towns possible.

Valton had many, many characters and RPers pop in at total, but it's hard to say how many were active at best. It was a massive RP though, with many threads, and indeed, very non-combat related story most of the time, with a little outside threats to spice things up. (wolves, bandits, cave-adventures, etc).

I think cross-overs would still need a GM-Union - since characters for this are automatically accepted into Valton, by your logic. If you think you could revive Valton, go ahead, but feel free to also make a character in this.

We'll see if there's interest in resurrecting Valton at all. It's true though, if a crossover is done the same characters need to be accepted in both. But that's a problem for another time, if a problem at all.
