Turn Based Strategy and Tactics

Post » Sat Jun 21, 2014 7:52 pm

I am a huge fan of Turn Based Tactics games from way back. XCOM, Fallout Tactics, Jagged Alliance, it doesn't matter. I ate 'em all up. But for years there was a huge drought. Lately, we've had the Firaxis version of XCOM, Frozen Synapse, Xenonauts, and we're gonna be getting a new Jagged Alliance game (flashback) soon. Problem is, I have beaten all the aforementioned games repeatedly (except Xenonauts, still working on it), and I'm looking for new stuff. Anyone have any suggestions? Was Back in Action any good?

Command and Conquer is a good game to look into. Even though it is more a RTS game, there are some tactical elements to the game play. The Decade edition comes with every game that they made in the series.

If you haven't played a Civilization game, I highly suggest picking one up and trying it. I played the original when it came out way back when, but it didn't grab my attention until later on when the graphics were improved with Civilization 3. So if I had to suggest any Civ game to pick up on the cheap for a tryout, Civ 3 or 4 is the way to go. If you don't like unit stacking, then get Civ 5 (but it's a newer game and will cost you).

It's a TBS game but also a micro-management game as well because you're building ... a civilization.

For world building and combat in a fantasy setting, I like Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heros.

Try Wasteland 2, it's squad based like Fallout: Tactics.

Wow, that's a lot of suggestions. I've actually played Civilization and Alpha Centauri extensively (Emphasis on extensively, lol). But what I was more referring to was the specific type exemplified by Jagged Alliance and XCOM: You have a persistent squad of soldiers and the emphasis is on the tile-based turn based tactical side of things. Wasteland 2 might scratch the itch if it's anything like Fallout: Tactics. And I was under the impression that Pillars of Eternity was going to be real time, like Baldur's Gate? It'd be cool if it went turn based.

Silent Storm is one of my favourite turn based strategy games, it's on GOG now http://www.gog.com/game/silent_storm_gold . It has destructible environments and it's a lot of fun. I played it a bit last year and think it stands up well after all this time.

Somehow I never heard of Wasteland before. Funny to me that Tunnels and Trolls is still living on in this altered guise.

Ooh, good one! I played the demo ages ago and loved it, but never bought it for reasons of poverty. I think I'll go pick it up. Is it true that it turns into XCOM: WW2 at some point? Fighting aliens and such? Heard that somewhere.

I tried but I'm color blind and fhe colors played havoc with me. Only game I ever played where being color blind was a factor.

You never fight aliens... I don't want to spoil it for you though. But, if you want me to go into more detail let me know. I just didn't feel like writing something out if you weren't interested in reading it.

My personal suggestion would be Civilization 4 or 5, or Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3. HOMM 4 to 6 are... okay, but not quite right IMHO.

Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Secret of the Silver Blades. All turn based games. Excellent choices! :)

Chess. Alot of the TBS games are modeled after it.

My favorite Tactical game is Tom Clancy's EndWar, all you do is give voice commands and make sure you plan your attacks and properly upgrade your army, if your army's good enough you'll start automatically winning battles. I've beaten this game in under 10 moves :D.
