FIFA World Cup 2014 Discussion Thread #3

Post » Sun Jun 22, 2014 1:56 am

Hello!

(All Credit to 5c3j9r7Productions for the initial thread

This is the third iteration of the thread for discussing the FIFA World Cup. Feel free to talk about individual games, even as they're being played, where you're watching from, who your local team is, or anything else related to Football (or "soccer" as some of you may call it).

If you would like to make a prediction about the FIFA World Cup, I recommend you use the link below. It tells you who the winners and runners up of each group will face in the knockout stages - so hopefully it will avoid any confusion.

Enjoy the tournament!

Ghana and Germany tied. Wonder if this means anything significant for the US since they beat Ghana.

It means they're guaranteed to go through if the USA beat Portugal.

I really think Ghana deserved the win here - Ayew missed about 3 chances to play Gyan in - it ought to have been 3-2 Ghana.

Well, it makes the game little more than determining who will play who in the Last-16. You can't really predict who will win, though, US vs Ghana was a slow, borderline boring game (for an impartial viewer, like myself), whereas Ghana played a fast-paced attacking style football versus Germany. Granted, the German midfield demands that you play this. The US play much more physically - I worry they they'll have the pace to contend with Germany.

Certainly, they want to beat Portugal and secure a place to avoid disappointment. Their physicality should be able to shut down CR7

Great games going on. Surprised all the teams that are SUPPOSE to loose are not. Can't believe all the big names that are gone. I thought maybe one team, but two? Maybe more? Reading the original thread on peoples prediction, I wonder how many would like to redo their picks. :P

I knew Ghana was not to be ignored. They're a tough team. This match goes to show everyone who was saying "oh no USA had so much trouble against GHANA, how are they going to beat Portugal or Germany?!" that that's nonsense.

It's huge. It's a little soon to post all the scenarios, but broadly:

If the US can beat Portugal, then the US is guaranteed to advance, and the US-Germany game will be for who wins the group. The US would take the group with a win or draw at that point. Germany would need to win outright to take the group, and just avoid a collapse to take second.

If the US lose or draw to Portugal, then eveything is on the table and all 4 teams have a shot.

And, there's a huge difference in the next round. The second place finisher will likely have to take on Belgium. The winner will get a much weaker opponent (Algeria or Russia maybe).

First things first though. Gotta take care of business against Portugal. Go USA!
