What kind of magic did the Ancient Nords use?

Post » Mon Jun 23, 2014 12:48 am

I'm making a traditional Nord warrior, who follows the Old Ways. Throwing in the Clever Craft too, since it's a good dynamic, and I always incorporate magic in my builds. Then it donned on me that I have no idea what kind of magic they actually used back in the day. What do you think would fit? Are there any sources you could point me to detailing their use of magic?

Hevnoraak seems to be away from this forum, which svcks, he could tell you from personal experience. :P

I'd say they weren't limited to specific types of spells, I'd just use whatever, from destruction to alteration.

They used "Not so ancient" magic. (* >ω<)

Joking.

TBH, I think they used lots of what's still around. Alteration, destruction, Conjuration etc.

Oh, yeah, conjuration. Considering that we know some pretty necromantic backstories behind certain dragon priests, and that necromancy is Conjuration in Skyrim, Conjuration is definitely a valid advice.

same as they do today, the nords only hate magicin skyrim becuase it was shoehorned into their lore in Skyrim, up until then, their people were just as much users of magic as most other races. heck, in Morrowind and Oblivion they had a racial SPELL and nords had a bonus to restoration (the battle cry thing was only added in skyrim when they ruined the nord culture and turned them into vikings.)

Many of the draugr use whatever their decayed minds can still remember from destruction & conjuration, which means they spent their mortal lives as battlemages/spellswords. Dragon Priests, use destruction, conjuration, alteration & restoration.

And then, you have Ahzidal, the revered enchanter who provided Ysgramor and his 500 Companions with weapons. As for Shalidor, he is well... Shalidor.

Spike Siegel, I'd say there's no restriction to what your Nord should do.

Woad is an Alteration Spell. Thunderfist falls under Destruction.

Nords have a long History of creating very skilled Healers, even if Nords would never practice Ressurection.

Necromancy on Your Race is a Crime Against the Ancestors, but Mer and Beastfolk are fair Game. Beastfolk includes Nibenese, Bretons, and most Colovians.

http://theskyrimblog.ning.com/group/character-building/forum/topics/character-build-the-clever-man Pretty good build that I actually play tested. The only thing I would say is get rid of two handed and smithing, for destruction and alteration.
