Strange, Game-breaking graphics issues

Post » Tue Jun 24, 2014 5:59 am

After several years of playing on PS3, I bought Skyrim a few days ago from Steam. I play games on a laptop, which has worked just fine in the past. I can play Portal, Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, Kerbal Space Program, and Minecraft just fine (to name a few). I assumed Skyrim would be no different. However, when I started playing the game, something strange began happening. When I was on the prisoner wagon, I heard everything just fine. But visually, everything was going crazy. About 5 times per second, random grey polygons would pop up on the screen, flicking over and over. Sometimes there would be a gap where I could see Ralof's face. Otherwise I was totally blind. I'm very perplexed by this behavior. My computer is rendering the scene fine, but then other shapes are covering the work it did. The anology I came up with is if Einstein wrote an amazing paper, then spilled a bottle of ink all over it. How do I make my computer stop showing these shapes?

Are you sure that your computer has the proper requirements to play Skyrim?

System Requirements

  • Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
    • Processor: Dual Core 2.0GHz or equivalent processor
    • Memory: 2GB System RAM
    • Hard Disk Space: 6GB free HDD Space
    • Video Card: Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM
    • Sound: DirectX compatible sound card
  • Recommended:
    • Processor: Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU
    • Memory: 4GB System RAM
    • Video Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with 1GB of RAM (Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher; ATI Radeon 4890 or higher)

(In fact, the "recommended" requirements should be considered as the "minimum" requirements...)

Yeah, I have all of those. I know my hardware can handle the game because it DOES render the scene properly, it's just that it also renders other things that shouldn't be there. The fact that it gets the scene right first shows that the game can run.

Windows 7, Quad core Intel, 4 GB RAM, already installed the game on HDD. I don't know how to check the model of my GPU but Steam says that in "Primary VRAM" I have 1723 MB. I believe that's what I'm looking for here.

That might not be a good enough graphics card, all those games you listed previously are not graphic intensive at all, Skyrim is MUCH harder on you graphics cards then all those games (probably combined)

I don't understand what you guys are all saying. If my computer is rendering the scene (as evidenced by the presence of Ralof), how can it have too low specs? It is rendering everything, but extra things are being rendered as well. How does that show that my specs are too low?

I think we don't understand what you mean that it renders the scene well "but extra things are being rendered as well". Could you take pictures or make a video?

(Sorry I don't have link privileges)

There's a good representative image. The actual game can be seen, but most of it is blocked by grey shapes.

What is your actual GPU. Post a dxdiag. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1122570-how-to-dxdiag/

What are the frame rates you are getting? What temperatures are you getting (GPU, CPU, SYStem, etc)?

Obviously the game isn't rendering the scene properly or else you wouldn't be gettting these artifacts.

Are you using any mods at all? Graphic mods, texture mods, etc?

Have you done a quick game cache verify?

The opening scene with the cart is a cut scene, a movie if you will and is not rendered the same way the game is.

Intel? Graphics Media Accelerator HD

Ok im done with these notebook things. IMO you need a real GPU and an actuall gaming PC.

Before you say it plays these other games fine, know that you are comparing apples to oranges. The games you listed are very lite compared to Skyrim.

Maybe you will get it to show properly. Good luck hopefully someone can assist u.

It may be scripted, but it is a cut scene never the less. The fact that you are getting these graphics issues does not bode well for the game as not all shaders are in play during that part of the game. To me the game looks less detailed during the cart ride than it does in other parts of the game. Think about it, it is the only time you ever see the cart moving through the game, from the inside or outside of it.

You need a graphics card to play this game.

First of all you have too old drivers. Actually that's your drivers since you have bought that laptop right ???

Those are the never ones:https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3231&DwnldID=22521&ProductFamily=Graphics&ProductLine=Laptop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors+with+Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics&lang=eng

Actually that's a 1st gen HD series Intel GPU.

You should go here: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri - and write Skyrim at the blank screen.

Awesome tool that checks whether a particular game on a system can run or not.

either online via java, or manually below:

I used that tool before I bought the game and it said I was good to go.

Your computer is not rendering MORE things it is rendering things WRONG. Just because your computer can run those games you mentioned in the first post does not mean it can run any games. Those games take VERY little graphical power.

where was it on the meter?

You're beating a dead horse here. You have an ancient integrated graphics chipset with 64 MB of dedicated memory - all other memory that the chipset uses has to be grabbed from the system RAM. The chipset architecture itself doesn't support all of the features required to run the game. You simply don't have enough graphics processing power to run Skyrim. You can try updating the drivers as Mark suggested above, but I doubt it's going to make much difference. You'll certainly have to turn the graphics settings down to their lowest level if you can get the game to run at all.

Look at the Recommended requirements, not the Minimum ones.

Minimum requirements are worthless, if you want to play with acceptable frame-rates and high resolutions.

I would recommend you not base buying decisions soley on that website or sites like it. Those are third party sites that are grossly inaccurate at times.

You need to check official venues at least in addition to the above. Even google your system + Skyrim and see what pops up.

You have this device that doesn't have drivers: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/intelligent-systems/intel-hd-graphics-and-intel-graphics-media-accelerator/hd-graphics-overview.html

Install them; maybe it'll improve things. It's not a real graphics card but it's worth a try.

Well, probably that's his laptop: http://www.cnet.com/products/toshiba-satellite-a505-s6005/specs/

The thing is, his HD Intel video adapter only supports 1st generation Intel Core family processors !!!!

So, i thing those drivers wouldn't install at all. !!!! (But he can try of course) :icecream:
