What would you have done to improve combat?

I felt that there needed to be a good way to counter attack. It seems in CQC you just end up hitting eachother repeatedly until one of you dies. There wasnt a very good way to dodge attacks or parry them.

They should just make it so when you jump/move in a direction you roll or something.

I also think that when you swing a weapon, it doesnt just hit where your cursor is. It hits everything in the path of your swing, or at least the first thing it hits.

I'd mostly ask for seperate techniques, as seen in those https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hema+sword+fighting.

I'm less bothered by the actual system/mechanics of combat (although that could probably use some improvements too) than I am by the feeling of it. I think combat should feel fairly brutal and visceral. But to me, Skyrim feels like you're both just mindlessly swinging weapons at each other through the air in this floaty sort of way. There should be a greater sense of physicality, where your weapon actually stops when it goes into your opponent and there's a feeling of real impact. It's a matter of having the right kind of collision, physics, sound design, etc.

That said, at the end of the day I don't think Skyrim's combat is nearly as bad as what a lot of people seem to think, but maybe that's just cause I'm not super into heavy combat (more of a stealth or mage type of player, myself).

Well, blocking was, for the starters, done much better than in Oblivion. But I think there should have been a way to be able to time and block power attacks as well, the fact that they break through blocking every single time makes blocking kinda useless, especially for enemies.

Some things I'd love to see are the ability to dodge a hit rather than block it. And I'm not talking about the lame dodging you can currently do because enemies are just slow and mindless, I'm talking about enemy trying to slash you from above and you hitting a button that could make your character hop to side and counter. I'd also love to see Assassin's Creed style counter attacks which were, in my opinion, amazing, including being able to counter bare handed and steal your enemy's weapon.
I'd also love to see weapons act the way they do when you hit a blocking enemy with normal attack, instead of it looking as if we're swinging through air and not slashing armored man. And I'd also love to some grapling, but I suppose that could just go under counter attacks.

What worries me about implementing more dodging moves is that it could easily turn into one of those ridiculous games where the player is like some kind of ninja bunny, doing all sorts of leaps and twirls and barrel rolls. That type of combat always seems a little cartoonish to me.
