Where is all my free space going on my hard drive?

Post » Wed Jul 02, 2014 4:20 am

I know Windows is updating and I keep loosing Gigabytes of space. Yesterday I have 5 free gigs. Now I have 220 megabytes left. WTF? What is going on? What can I do?

I am on a Pro Book Mac. I also have Windows 8.1 on it so I can play games. So how come I basically have no hard drive space left and I didn't install anything on it.

What can I do to get my my hard drive space back?

*edit*

I am going through every file and it seems the Windows/WinSxS folder has like 14 gigs of files in there. Before it was like 6-8. It ballooned in a few days? WTF. 50 gigs was partionted for Windows 8 and now almost all of it is used to just start up the computer? I only have 2 games on it and no music or anything else on it. Argh. Can't even play games on it, so is there anything I can do?

Look for a utility called CCleaner. It will remove any junk files that are present when your system boots up. It has a few other handy features as well, and they have a consumer version which is free. That should free up some of your space. Windows is notorious for hanging on to files that it no longer needs. You might want to expand the size of your partition as well. 50 gig is awfully small if you're going to be installing a few games on it as well. I'd at least double that if I were you. A single modern game can take up to 10 gig all on it's own so it won't take long to use up your partition.

In addition to what Nicho suggested, also download a free program called "Wiztree", which basically gives you a breakdown of all the files on your computer and tells you where all your hard-drive space is being allocated. So you can pinpoint where you're seeing the space being used up the most.

I used this to figure out that one of my games was creating multiple backups of its core files for some reason, causing it to take up an extra 15 gigs of memory that it didn't need.

I will try that guys. Sadly I don't know how to make a bigger partition. I don't want to screw up my Mac side. Will try out and see what happens when I try your suggestions.

Thank you. Will let you know what happens.

Could be a shadow copy that windows makes. I've seen them gobble up hard drive space big time.

I used them, didn't get much. Wiztree does show me that the WinSxS is taking up most of the space as I said before it was 6 gb then showed 14gb, but now showing 6gb but only have less than a gig of space left. Argh.

*edit* rebooted computer, now have 6 gigs of space left. Thanks guys, I think it worked. How or why, not sure, but thank you.

What is WinSxS? I googled it and people say not to touch them.

I don't have Win 8 but I'm pretty sure it has certain utility called Disk Cleanup like Win 7 has. Start it, select "Clean up system files", select your system drive and once it has done scanning it, make sure "Windows Update Cleanup" is selected. Clean the drive, reboot the computer and several gigs of old stuff should be gone.
