How can I name an Argonian character?

Post » Sun Jul 06, 2014 12:26 pm

I was going to pick one from older games like I usually do, but then it hit me: The name is special for an Argonian.

In other races, a name can be repeated.

But Argonians are named in a ceremony upon their birth. It's something very unique to each of them.

I'd believe that there's never been two Argonians with the same name in all history.

This only leaves me with the option of using one of those name generators, but I'm not sure I can trust those. Besides, Argonian names have meaning and the result in these random options could make no sense.

Look around your basemant for words, and choose what feels natural to you.

Hello there!

I can't post links, but if you go to uesp dot net (or search "Argonian names" on w/e search engine), you can find an article with all documented Argonian names. One of my favorite parts of the page is the Arena/Daggerfall section. It has prefixes and suffixes that would be randomly generated for Argonians in those games, so you can mix and match.

While they may not carry meaning, it may be better than a name generator as far as lore is concerned.

Not trying to be rude, but I don't think you read my post where I explained my dilemma in picking a name from uesp.

As for Arena/Daggerfall names, the problem is... they don't sound Argonian at all.

Those seem more similar to Imperial names.

I can't imagine how this could possibly be true. Even if parents tried their hardest not to repeat names there is no way they could know every name that has been chosen throughout history, not to mention names that are being picked right now in other parts of Tamriel. Logically, there has to be at least some repetition.

So the parents do it?

I'd always believed Argonian hatchlings are directly named by the Hist itself.

I always check out the uesp for names in past games. Sometimes I check out the name generator too. Then I come up with something that I think fits the lore, while also being something I like.

Most of the time it takes me longer to come up with a name than it does for me to create my character.

Gamera.

Because names are cool when they're references.

Backstory first, name later if you want to go the "meaningful name' route.

Or you can just make a name up. Not like we know much about Jel anyways. I went with Rutee for my Argonian dragonborn, cause it's vaguely Argonian-sounding and it's the name of a character from another series.

Did the hist name Brand-Shei too? That would kind of make sense given that his real name is Brandryl, I suppose, but I also thought that wasn't supposed to be possible for non-Argonians to speak with the Hist. I just assumed it was a coincidence.

Your best case scenario (if you really want to avoid a parent-chosen Cyrodiilic name) is to http://www.imperial-library.info/search/node/%5Bjel%5D, and pick a portmanteau from that where we know the meaning. An-Xuth would be a bit rude. Haj-Thtithil would mean "hides-her-eggs", and so on.

I just name them to what fits their character best, instead of following naming conventions.

Remember, not all Argonians lick the Hist, especially the ones born else where, in that case the parents name the child.

As for the Arena/Daggerfall names? Don't see why they don't sound Argonian.
