Trying to get hooked into this game

Hello skyrim folks

I am new to the forum and new to the series. I recently bought this game after so long since it's release, thanks to a suggestion from one of my friends.

But I am trying so hard to like this game and here is the reason why.

Right now I am a level 4 high elf, and things were going fairly well due to some frame rate drops here and there but when I got to the college of Winterhold, things became a nightmare as the game became suddenly unplayable even with the latest patch installed.

It starts with Tolfdir's missing dialogue, which I am able to exit the conversation the first time. However, in order to progress to the quest I have to first engage to the conversation completely.

Ok, so I give it a second try and now, not only did he forget his script, the game crashes although I can still hear the in game music.

I have tried rebooting up the game several times and I have succeeded getting past these issues but it's frustrating that I have to keep doing this every time he starts up a new conversation in a different location.

Can anyone provide me with a remedy? I really like the game's sense of exploration. Skyrim looks vast, the rpg element and the story seems interesting enough for me to want explore it further. Please help me do that.

Welcome to the forum. To get your game to run smoother on the PS 3 there are several thing you can try.

1st- Make sure you have enough HD space. I would purge/delete all old games and junk files.

2nd- Put your PS3 into safemode and run an option 3 and 4 to help clean thing up.

3rd- In the game Turn off all auto safes and manually safe every 20-30 minutes of game play.

I would also save before entering a building or cave. This will save you from replaying old parts if you die.

When you first notice a frame rate or the game is feeling slow that is your clue to shutdown the

PS3 and restart a crash/game freeze is right around the corner if you don't.

When I first started playing Skyrim I had many issues like you are discribing. It turned out my HD was acting up

I had to send my PS3 back to Sony and they replaced the HD.

With the new HD and following the rules above I have been able to play to lvl79 with no issues.

Good Luck

Play a tidy game, that can help with the save file over time. In other words, pick up after self. If there is a sword on the ground after a battle, pick it up and put in in a corpses inventory. If you open a door, close it, that kind of thing. You don't have to go overboard with this, but just keep this in mind as you go along.

Yes, turn off the Autosaves, if nothing else, they will save you into a corner you can't get out of. 99.99% of the quest glitches can be resolved with reloading the game from before you started the quest (it's OK to receive the quest, just when you get ready to do something with it, make a new save slot, or use an old one that you know you don't need to go back to). You can never have too many save slots, and you can always delete excess ones later.

Excellent tip for sure.

For some reason this game remembers everything (EVERYTHING) you do and that is why your game save file size grows so large and will give you trouble on the PS 3 later in the game.

For example: If you loot someone you killed and drop all the unwanted stuff on the ground the game will remember that 2 weeks later the loot will be right where you dropped it.

Stupid little stuff like that can really add up over time.

I usually don't see game issues until my game file size gets around 6700-7200

The smaller you can keep your game save file the smoother / less you will have to shutdown/restart

The game does reset after some period of time. Example if you use a chest outside of your home one day your stuff will just be gone.

However your games file size does not adjust lower.

OutandBack, I followed your steps, however the problem continue to persist. I gave up on the college and I am now doing the other quests which don't suffer from the same issues.

I might go back to the college one day to finish it, in the mean I'll just focus on the other quests - they seem to be doing alright so far.

Thanks again for your help.
