The year is 2282. It has been five years and a month since the Lone Wanderer arose from Vault 101 and set into play a series of events that changed the Wasteland forever. The Brotherhood, with the support of the Lone Wanderer, led an assault against the Enclave and destroyed Raven Rock. Yet in light of the attack, the Enclave launched a counter-assault upon the Citadel, where the Brotherhood barely managed to hold on. Many of the Brotherhood were lost, including the Lone Wanderer, who was struck down in battle against the Enclave's Supreme Commander, Alan Sutler. Furious at the death of their compatriots and the damage done by vertibird bombings, the Brotherhood made a last stand against the Enclave at Project Purity. Although the battle was long and costly, the Brotherhood prevailed and forced the Enclave into a full-scale retreat. The few Enclave outposts remaining throughout the Wastes were left to fend for themselves until they could mount a rescue mission. However, despite the Brotherhood's claims to victory, the loss of life and destruction wrought prevents either side from truly claiming glory.
Within the last five years, numerous city-states have risen to power: Megaton, as well as Olney and the Talon Company have all been absorbed by the Enclave, quite willingly. The Outcasts have rejoined the Lyons Brotherhood after the arrival of the Midwestern Brotherhood of Steel, who brought news of a new home for them all. The Tenpenny Tower has annexed the Warrington Train complex and has since become a regional power, known as De Burgo. Girdershade, which was once a hub of trade, has now been overrun by cultist Super Mutants.
The Canterbury Commons has become a commercial center for all Capital Wasteland trade, now known as the Merchant Union; while raids from the Pitt, and the threat of enslavement by Paradise Falls keeps the North in fear. Eventually, however, the North reluctantly signed a peace treaty with the Regulators and Capital Rangers, alongside the Mattheson Militia. Just down south lies the mysterious land of Point Lookout, which brought the Swampfolk to the Capital Wasteland seeking trade. Despite this, their naturally hostile nature has soured relations on multiple occasions, leading to an assault by the Talon Company, hired by the Merchant Union. Rivet City still remains the premium supplier and manufacturer of firearms, despite competition.
