Biggest Let-down in gaming?

Post » Thu Jul 17, 2014 1:08 pm

Most recently? Tropico 5.

I felt it was a huge step down from Tropico 4 + Modern Times and I really didn't like the idea of progressing through eras much at all. The dynasty system was tacked on and the tech tree was almost useless. I adore T4 and as far as I'm concerned it was the last game made.

Over all? Hard to say, really. There are dozens of games I consider let-downs, but none really noteworthy. I would have to say Bioshock Infinite for basically being different than the Raputre series was...or Borderlands 2 because, i don't know, it just felt like I did it all before.

Minecraft is also up there. The level of hype I heard about it before trying it was monumental. I went in thinking it was a revolutionary game of infinite possibilities...and was sorely disappointed.

Just a headsup, the novels are considered by a lot of people to be better then the games (There's a reason why there on the new york best sellers list), and are generally (Minus Kilo five trilogy) very well written. A lot of people appreciate the MC's personality being from the expanded universe now.

I meant more in: you can't build vehicles, environmental conditions don't matter, weapons and armor is the same, just reskined, almost no enemy variety, and the AI is mentally broken.

Some people may enjoy it and it's mod scene, but to me it's just too empty of any real content.

I may be a bit harsh, I KNOW a lot of people like it. It's just not my cup of tea

Well this thread is of mostly opinion, and maybe it was just the book I tried reading. It followed right after finishing a Stephen King novel so perhaps that had something to do with it.

But my post wasn't about the books. Halo 4 just doesn't have any memorable moments or missions in it like each previous game had. Like missions I would replay just because they were so much fun. I did have fun in the game, just not what I had expected from such a long awaited game that was so hyped.

All my biggest gaming disappointments happened in the early 00s for some reason, games like Deus Ex: Invisible War, Half-Life 2, Hitman 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2.

The latest letdown is that SEGA West released very few games from SEGA Japan in the past 2-3 years, but instead they only focus on their own Sega West studios doing Total War, Football Manager and so on. While I much rather see western releases of the SEGA Japan games like Valkyria Chronicles 3, Yakuza 1&2 HD and more importantly Yakuza 5. Oh, and a Shenmue 1&2 HD would be very nice too

If no western release of Yakuza 5 is announced before the end of the year, I think I will import it from Japan. Wonder how much I will understand though, I did study Japanese at the university and did rather well actually, but it was many years ago and I'm rather rusty now.

The studio shutting down was my problem. So much lost potential. I still wonder what it could've been like had they gotten a second chance as I really did enjoy some aspects of KoA.

I actually enjoyed it a bit. :) The combat was great (for me) as I usually find combat boring or slow in other RPGs (Looking at you TES :stare: ). And even though the world was rather bland, It had..some moments (I think?).

The future of Fallout. Which is sort of up in the air at the moment, but I am already prepared for disappointment.

Oh, and Cliff Bleszinski. Just in general.

For me, 2 MMOs come to mind.

My first big gaming disappointment was Dungeons And Dragons Online. I was so hoping to be able to play D&D with others since all my gaming buddies had moved out of town. I think my expectations were quite unrealistic for this one.

My second big disappointment was more recent. TES:O. It barely resembles an "Elder Scroll" games, in my opinion. So much from the series could have been implemented to send the MMO industry on it's rear. Instead, they chose to make it a modern MMO (no RPG) first and foremost and an Elder Scrolls game a far distant second.

Mass Effect 3, closely followed by X: Rebirth.

Saints Row the Third with Skyrim somewhere along that line to a lesser extent. Skyrim isn't terrible, but it's clearly a rushed game that that failed in points due to the famed 'curse of 11/11/11'.

Either EA purchasing ____ developer, or M$ buying Rare and doing nothing with them for 10 years.

Hard to pin it down to just one.

Mass Effect 3: The finale to an otherwise great trilogy utterly ruined by exploitative practices, dumbuggery and an utterly [censored] ending. ME3 left such a foul taste in my mouth it's ruined the entire franchise for me frankly.

Dragon Age 2: Origins was one the finest RPGs ever made, while Dragon Age 2 was the definition of cheap cash-in. Unfinished and buggy with ludicrous design decisions that demonstrated how little EA Bioware thinks of their consumers. I was expecting a sequel to Origins, instead I got a massive turd that truly demonstrates the fall of Bioware.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: The pre-release material looked great, and despite the fact it was an MMO, I was still looking forward to the next chapter in the OR series. While the game was still enjoyable, it was very much so a let down due to the reliance on quest design from around the year 1997 and ridiculous grinding.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir: Mask of the Betrayer stands as one of the finest campaigns I've ever experienced in an RPG; deep, complex, morally ambiguous and challenging. MotB was an amazing expansion to Neverwinter Nights 2, and I was hyped for SoZ with its promise of a more open world and greater exploration. Instead, it felt far more shallow, with virtually no interesting places to visit and no particularly interesting characters. I didn't even finish it since I got so bored with it after MotB.

Off the top of my head ..

Daikatana

Duke Nukem Forever

the dissolution of 3DO, ID, Interplay, Troika

initially Oblivion

initially HoMM4

Bioware acquired by EA

Fallout 3

Diablo 3

Skyrim

My biggest disappointment I think has to be Oblivion. However after I tried vanilla Skyrim in 2013, I swear nothing was worse. I struggled for some 30 minutes in the UI just to make a character, then killed a giant spider with 1 hit from a pick axe. Then played it for a 20 more minutes as a hiking simulator, while my eyes battled with flickering shadows everywhere.

More recently the bankruptcy of Big Huge games and their IP going to hell

I also have to say TESO and especially the incompetence of ZOS. Wont give names but that is horrible. Bubble development for 5 years , no PR for 5 years, (and there were serious competitors like Guild Wars 2 who ate away most of its target audience). Eventually they reached out to fans but it was too late. The art direction was wrong. The concept was wrong. I will just quote one of the developers - We don't want just elder scrolls, we want to make a good game first (!). Only thing done right are the PvP formats (Matt Firror's work I presume) similar to DaoC and Gw1. Being left without the majority of the MMO crowd, and with only the TES and Skyrim fans promted ZOS to increasingly use false marketing by including the Dovakhin and Nordic imagery reminiscent of Skyrim all over their promo material. This was to draw more Skyrim players into TESO, especially console owners since it used to be the biggest market in US, bigger than PC. Don't know who plays that game, its fate reminds me of TOR. Not sure if it can break 1 mill concurrent users.

Mass Effect 3 was amazing.. Better than ME2, but its story wasn't as strong as ME1..

the ending may not have been the highest quality, but it is still no where near as bad as people claim..
I think the main reason people were upset about it is they were ticked off Shepard had to die (this going off the fact that those who complain about the ending over on Bioware forums always say "will never play a ME game without Shepard.. Shepard is ME!!1")

and while we are on the subject, IT is stupid as heck... those who claim to believe it are suffering from a major sense of denial

Make no mistake , KoA is a respectable action RPG. Its weakest point for most people was the overly traditional fantasy setting, lacking that "something special" which makes each good RPG unique, and the art direction could be argued but both are matters of taste. Apart from those I couldn't find any structural or technical flaws and have enjoyed game thoroughly. There was texture distance scaling but that's understandable as the game was planned for consoles too. A smoothly executed open world action RPG, something not easy to accomplish at all.

True although Dreamcast had great games (ports) like Goldeneye, Killer Instinct series (!) and others :)

may I ask why you had an issue with Majoras Mask?

JW as i really enjoyed it.. it was quite a bit darker than most Zelda games, but it was nice to see a game focused more on the Side Quests and characters.. it gave much more Backstory to most NPCs than other Zelda's
