Fresh Restart - Choosing a Mage Race Part II

Post » Fri Jul 18, 2014 4:10 am

Hello again, everyone - anyone who participated in my previous post on this subject, welcome back.

As I mentioned in my last, recent post on the first part of this topic, I decided to narrow down the options after thinking about the four races for a mage/necromancer character I mentioned before: Breton, Imperial, Dunmer, and Orc. Now, after thinking of each race - I found two races to be less appealing and two to be tied with one another as to which race I would choose for my future mage characters in Skyrim, Oblivion, and (whenever the console-editions will come out) Online. The races that I decided to let go were the Dunmer (sorry Telvanni) and the Orc (although Orc characters will still be made - I'd rather not let the names I created go to waste. I might even let anyone looking for male Orc names have one or two if asked, heh). This means I'm stuck between Breton and Imperial.

As for the reasons I chose these two, I'll explain below. Just like before - feel free to share your opinion of which of these human races would make for a more interesting and/or enjoyable Mage character in terms of appearance, backstory potential, etc.

- Both were chosen because, oddly enough, I'm more fascinated with the Human races than the Elven races (aside from the Orsimer and Dwemer). Both Imperial and Breton lore is interesting to me - with the two classifications of Imperials and the history of how the Breton people came to be and their rise to power in High Rock. I also like the appearance of both the Imperials and the Bretons - I plan to make my Mage characters of a fair, pale complexion, their physique showing they're more concerned with their studies and obtaining of arcane power rather than physical power.

-Bretons: As I mentioned before, this is a classic choice of human mage race - considering their stats in previous games and, in Skyrim, their bonuses, magicka resistance, and their racial power. Since the Bretons are naturally attuned to the forces of magicka, I can see from a gameplay point-of-view why they might be chosen. In terms of backstory creation, there could be a number of things to choose for a Breton Necromancer and, for Oblivion and Online, a Conjurer. Another reason I chose Breton is something I once discussed a long time ago on these forums - their natural affinity for Conjuration and Necromancy, as well as their stance on these two schools of magic (if anyone wants to read it, here's a link: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1467032-bretons-conjuration-and-necromancy/ )). Because the Bretons are more lax when it comes to people practicing either of these schools of magic - and with the Mages Guild's dissolution early in the 4th Era, a Breton Necromancer could find a reason to seek the College of Winterhold in the land of the Nords for the sake of furthering their knowledge of magic, including the "Black Art" as Hannibal Traven so "kindly" called it... And, although this might seem a bit ridiculous of a reason - I can see a bit of myself in the Bretons, considering the ancestry I have (as far as I'm aware, I have German, English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry - sadly I'm unaware of anything else I may be). Again, I know, ridiculous reason but I still say it's a reason.

-Imperials: The race of Cyrodiil and their diversity as a people gives them great potential in any path they choose to pursue. Their province, being the melting pot of culture and professions it is, could also provide interesting backstory ideas and reasons for a character of the Imperial race and their choice of class and reasons for pursuing it. Although - as Quirkyusername mentioned in the first part of this topic - the new administration of the Imperials and pressure from the necromancy and conjuration-hating Synod may make this difficult, a necromancer would have been able to legally obtain the corpse of a traitor or criminal if they were in service to the Empire. If this is no longer the case or would be more difficult to do legally, then perhaps the College of Whispers could play a role in an Imperial Necromancer's backstory - being a former member who could have left the organization due to a lack of interest in their political squabbling and rivalry with the Synod - which would provide a reason to seek out Skyrim for the College of Winterhold.

I'd pick Breton. I like their man-mer heritage and love both their affinity for, and resistance, to magic.

Bretons, get a better affinity to magic, the 25% resist and dragonskin (which if you use with the atronach stone makes you invincible to magic)

Heh, well - I was correct in expecting Bretons to be the immediate response so far. Anyone else?
