Doom: Good first impressions?

Post » Sat Jul 19, 2014 1:54 am

Here's the information IGN scraqed together.

  • Fast-paced combat against multiple enemies at once - Doom 3 this ain't.
  • Set outside a massive UAC research facility on Mars as it's being invaded by the forces of Hell.
  • Hellknights, cyberdemons, revenants, mancubii, and other classic monsters were spotted throughout the demo.
  • Classic Doom weapons, including the fan-favorite double-barrell shotgun return. Plasma rifle, rocket launcher, and the good old chainsaw were also shown off.
  • Go fast. "Doom is not about about taking cover" said executive producer Marty Stratton.
  • Doom is powered by IdTech 6, and will be for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. They are "committed" to 1080P at 60 frames-per-second.
  • Wonderfully gory close range executions, including special ones for dropping down on enemies from above.
  • Revenants now have jetpacks and can hover about while firing rockets at you.
  • At least one weapon, the combat shotgun, has an alternate fire mode, which allows you to charge up and release multiple shells in rapid succession.
  • Sprinting, double-jumping and mantling are all possible, making for very fluid motion during combat.
  • Enemies can teleport in for old-school style ambushes
  • Dying results in a crazy fatality scene depending on what killed you a la Dead Space. Revenants rip your arms off and punch straight through your combat helment.
  • Old school mechanics. No reloading your clip, hold as many weapons as you want, health and ammo pick-ups etc. NO REGENERATING HEALTH.

I have loved every single game id has made, and I'm sure that this'll be no different. But, I wanna know what you guys think.

Only the future will tell us. The market is not the same as the 90s and the gameplay seems to be totally designed for keyboard and mouse, it looks like a brutal doom under id tech 6 skin. Not sure if the console gamer will adopt this. As I said, we need to see if it will work in the modern gaming market where Bungie and 343i rule the world with their futuristic FPS like Destiny and Halo.

I need to see it before judging. I hope at least to see a horror atmosphere like Doom 3.

Negative here, bastards decided they were too show any of us, because we can't afford a flight halfway around the world to attend an event to see one specific clip.

Plenty of ways and things they could have done to show their appreciation to the people that did show up (And you all deserved something Believe me), but there are better ways to do it that don't [censored] on everyone else wanting to hear about it.

I've never had to be angry at bethesda before, they usually do things right, cept for this mistake now and ESO xD

This sounds great. Doing fatalities on them sounds lame to me, but seeing them do it to the player seems awesome. I've always wanted this in Doom, Doom3 had it in its public demo but they didn't implement it to the final game and that pissed me off.

Oh, come on. You can't knock the game itself for the publisher's (admittedly crappy) handling of the reveal demo.

No reload animations? Now even a die hard doom fan like me didn't expect that at all!

Oh please! What do you know about market? Noone knows what gamers need! Probably bringing back an awesome arcade doom experience with modern presentation is exactly what market needs! How many faceless military shooters do gamers need. They just don't have a choice. Classic doom is not an option...but it's modern reimagining probably is. We'll see.

The beta of Destiny turned the haters in believers. The game is awesome. Expecting the doom beta on PS4 to see if the game will be playable in consoles.

Bungie made FPS to be playable in consoles, before them, no one did it properly. That's why they are worshiped. Rare's Goldeneye 007 showed that FPS is possible in consoles, but Bungie showed how to do it properly.

id always focused on PCs and even in games like Rage with simultaneous releases for consoles, they showed that consoles are secondary for them.

I'm impressed with what I hear, but I'm not too sure on the Brutal Doom influences. I'm really feeling like this is almost a sequel to Brutal Doom rather than an actual Doom reboot.

I wouldn't be too worried about the controller not keeping up to fast-paced shooters:

It really boils down to how the controls work simply.

Love nearly everything I heard except those console-ish finishing moves...

I don't mind some finishing moves, but fatalities like God of War are not acceptable. I remember how goofy Serious Sam 3 is with some fatalities like ripping the eyes of some monsters like kratos does to cyclops.

Hmm true although SS3 didn't have classic finishing moves but rather melee oneshots. Which I like far more than finishing moves. And enemies start to blink when about to finish them ? Really? That's just not what I'd expect from DOOM...

The demo that was played at Quake Con was rumored to have been played with a console controller, interpret from that what you will.

Either console pandering, or it actually plays well on consoles for some reason.

First off let me say this: I absolutely hate Brutal Doom and everything about it.

Aside from the glaring BD influence (finishers? Really id?) I'm still pretty excited to see what they've got going on.

@Mohfuu: What do you mean "for some reason." Did you really think they weren't gonna make it work on consoles too?

can't knock it at all since they wouldn't let me see anything.

Far as I'm concerned all I've seen so far is mistreatment of the eager fan base, not a good start. Lets see what they do next and I'll see how I feel then I guess.

Negative impressions thus far. Apparently, the level design is very linear, which is the last thing I wanted to hear.

As for the lack of reloading - I hope that doesn't mean there are no minor reloading animations for the shotgun, these are a must.

How would it ever be a good idea to show some sprawling maze of a level during a gameplay reveal demo? How could these snippets of gameplay at all be an indication of level design? If they went as far as including old-school Doom traits like No Reloading, No ADS, Fast Movement Speed and Health Pick-Ups, why would they stop at one of the most iconic things about classic Doom in the first place?

Not saying the full game WON'T be linear, I just don't understand why two 5-minute snippets of gameplay specifically shown to demonstrate the movement and gunplay of the game would make anyone draw the conclusion that the whole game is super linear. We should not even consider level design in our assessment of the game until we see more of the game or the dev team start actually talking about it.

I don't know, from what i've heard it just sounds like they copy pasted brutal doom into idTech6. If that is the case I'm going to be put off a little because it sounds like no creativity went into the development of this title.

All these finishing moves make me feel like they didn't completely abandon their last version. The one they dubbed "Call Of DooM"

I hope they show the video soon, the feeling of the game to be similar to Serious Sam 3 is letting the game with bad vibes around the forums. Just show the video to end speculations.
