Quick and Dirty Overhauling

Post » Wed Jul 23, 2014 3:09 am

Once every year or two I get this inexplicable urge to try, once again, to beat Oblivion. My last effort was a fortnight of tinkering using FCOM as a base and customizing off/adding to that. I think I managed to close a couple more gates that time...

Now the fateful bug has bit again. Naturally, I still have all those old mods archived. But despite my fondness for tinkering, I think it would behoove me to pare down that list and get some fresh blood involved. Is FCOM still the way to go for a complete overhaul? Was WAC ever released? Have there been any recentish guides of note or is Delte's list still relevant for immersion mods? Is this the year I make it to the Shivering Isles?!

There are a couple of new overhauls that won't require a fortnight of tinkering to install. You should check out Tamriel Immersion Experience and Maskars Oblivion Overhaul.

Other mods to consider are Better Cities, Unique Landscapes, Enhanced Economy and All Natural and if you are into magic either Supreme Magicka or Lame (or both).

I've heard that FCOM won't play well if you install it with both Better Cities and Unique Landscapes (it's just too much for the system to handle) but Maskars will run along side of them both just fine.

WAC has been released as Beta 1.0. It is stable. I'm using it in my current game and I like it very much. It's not really what I would call an "overhaul" mod though. It's more like Martigen's mod in that it adds tons of new creatures, NPCs and of course all of Waalx's fantastic weapons and armor. It makes the game more difficult because of this but it doesn't change any game mechanics - which is what I tend to think when I think of the word ovehaul.

Maskar's is the newest OOO-style, general-purpose overhaul around these days. It has the great advantage of being configurable via an .ini file.
