FPS cap

Post » Fri Jul 25, 2014 8:31 am

Hello. I have the steam GOTY deluxe version, and the game is stuck at 30 fps. I tried with both v.sync turned on/off. With turned off v.sync, fps in the menu reaches 999 but ingame it's still 30. I also tried using D3D Overrider. With it, in the menu fps reaches 60 but drops to 30 once ingame. So is there any way to cap the framerate at 60 ingame?

Are you using OSR? THe default ini settings in OSR will cap the game at 30 FPS. You can change that to any number you want.

However, in my experience, capping FPS at 30 leads to a much more stable game. Your FPS affects the rate the system uses memory and by capping the FPS at 30, I have pretty much eliminated out of memory errors in my heavily modded game. I have played for four or five hours straight without running out of memory (knock on wood) with the FPS capped at 30, but when I adjust the cap to 40, the game crashes after an hour or two.

If you are not running many memory intensive mods, you might be able to increase your FPS, but the game was not designed to run at high FPS rates like a modern shooter, so it does not look or function much better visually at 60 vs 30.

No, I'm not using that.

The game stutters a little at 30 fps at the moment. Also when I'm on the menu where there's a moving map animation, it moved smoother when I turned off v.sync(when there was 999fps in the menu) but it lags with 30 fps while v.sync is turned on. Forgot to mention, game jumps to 60 fps whenever I engage in a conversation with someone and drops back to 30 when I exit one. I don't know, the change is very visible. With 30 fps the game is very choppy so I thought with 60 it would be a little bit more smoother.

I'm currently using these plugins:

Better Imperial City

Better Dungeons

Better Daedric Shrines Full

And I have these spec:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40Ghz

The game shouldn't lag at 30 fps with these, even with all the plugins, right?

Actually, the game will lag quite a bit with your load order. Although you have a solid machine, Oblivion is an old game and not optimized for a modern OS or a modern multicore CPU, so when you load it up with mods like Better Citties and Unique Landscapes, there will be a significant FPS hit.

You might want to try OSR to smooth out your framerate. But with your load order, you are not going to get more than 25-30 in exterior locations affected by Better Cities (less in the Imperial City waterfront)and probably not more than about 40 FPS in places that are not affected by Better Cities but are affected by Unique Landscapes. In interiors, you may get 60 FPS, but not likely in exterior areas affected by those mods.

There's no way to eliminate the stuttering completely, and if you managed to run your frame rate up higher, the stuttering might actually become more noticeable. Frame rates over 30 are of no real value in this game, anyway.

The game is CPU-and-Harddrive-bottlenecked. The game doesn't really support multithreading, so you're running on basically one core. When there's a lot of CPU load, like in areas with heavy AI, or extensive detail, sometimes the system just can't keep up. On top of that, you have to load from disk every time you cross an invisible cell boundary, which can cause a hiccup (or worse.)

I actually managed to fix it by using that plugin which was mentioned earlier. OSR? Capped the fps at 60 and everything is working smoothly now. Both outdoors and indoors. Thank you all for you replies!
