Questions about healthstaminamana upon level-up.

Post » Fri Jul 25, 2014 8:38 am

I wanted to make a character that would be capable of doing pretty much all Skyrim has to offer - casting spells, fighting in melee with 2h or shield+1h, using stealth with daggers/bows...

However i am having trouble determining how many points should i put into health/stamina/mana when i am leveling up?

I suppose health will never be the worst choice, but too much of it would stop being useful after a point.

I can protect myself using magic, gear/enchants, healing, summon creatures, or just combat tactics like dodging or stealth...

Mana is always great since you can do damage, summon creatures, inflict crowd control, heal/protect yourself and even restore stamina through the restoration perk.

As long as i am "living" (enough health/defenses to survive), to me it seems Mana is the most useful attribute regardless of what weapon/combat style i am using.

Stamina seems the least useful, since it only helps with rather secondary stuff like sprinting/rolling/power attack/bow zoom/carry weight.

Not only that, but i need only 1 point of stamina to execute even the most costly of power attacks/rolls without losing any damage!

Seems much better to use enchants/gear/stones to add a bit more stamina if i REALLY need it... but the restoration perk (restores stamina) or any form of constant stamina regeneration would give plenty of Stamina for power attacks.

I think that perhaps for every 2 level-ups i put into Mana i should put 1 level-up into Health... and i should completely skip putting any level-up points into Stamina.

But i wanted to ask you, more experienced dragonborn, about your opinion on this topic?

Thank you for reading and helping me out :)

My character doesn't really use magic so my response will be skewed by that.

But I overwhelmingly put my points into health as it will make the difference between life and death most of the time.

I also put a lot into stamina as I use a bow a lot and fed up of being overencumbered. But again, health is still a priority.

At the start of the game I am usually doing 4 to 1 Health and Stamina.

Early in the game I've been known to get in a little too deep so running away is always an option over dying.

I don't usually add to magic until about lvl20 when I start using magic and soul gems to enchant items for cash.

Unless I am doing a mage/magic only play thru.

Around lvl60 and my fighting days are over I go back to college and pretty much use magic only.

I do carry an ebony dagger and wood crossbow just in case, haha

For an all rounder I would suggest a ratio of: 3H-2M-2S. That a fairly good balance I think for the type of character that you are describing.

If I'm playing Warrior I put points into Health. If I'm playing a Mage I put points into Magicka. I have never put any points into Stamina on any character.

I usually do the following:

Mage : 3 Magicka, 1 Health, 1 Stamina

Warrior : 0 Magicka, 3 Health, 2 Stamina

Rogue: 1 Magicka, 3 Health, 1 Stamina

But I do use better travel, so I turn off fast travel... so sprinting and carry weight matters.

That leads to issues. The game is meant to role play, which to me means to specialize at least to some extent. Other wise the game is the same for every play through. Also your character ends up being weaker than a specialized character -- at least until very high levels.

At higher levels you can pretty much do everything if you want. But by then most Magicka, Health and Stamina are allocated.

Recommend picking a play style for earlier levels (e.g. Mage, Warrior, Rogue).

I have invested well over 5K hrs across 50+ characters and have yet to put a single level into Stamina.

For a versatile character, the amount of health pends upon the level of difficulty and playstyle of the player and profile of the character. While one will always "play the way they want", it is highly encouraged by members like myself, to suggest specializing a character's skills based upon their personality profile.

In the end... invest enough into Health to stay alive and put the rest into Magicka.

... Mana does not exist in TES.

My two cents:Never invest in Health: Use armor/difficulty to balance vulnerability to your liking.Never invest in Magicka: Use enchanted gear to cut or even eliminate magic cost. Unless, of course, enchanting or enchanted gear just isn't in your character's character. :-)Stamina is always great. From melee to eagle eye, to just getting from point A to point B. Stamina is always great.

If you focus on being both a mage and a warrior/rogue at the same time, you're going to run into serious trouble, right out of the door. If you want a capable jack of all trades, you need to aim for a high level character.

Here's the sequence that has worked for me:

  1. 20 levels on health: 100 magicka, 300 health & 100 stamina. Not enough room for more than two power attacks, but survivability is more than enough to compensate.
  2. 20 levels on stamina, to bring it on par with health.
  3. 10 levels on health, to bring it to 400.
  4. 30 levels on magicka: the old -and obsolete- level 81 cap, which leaves the character with 400 magicka, 400 health & 300 stamina. Whether you settle for it, or aim even higher with the legendary skills system, is up to you.

I think it really depends on what your playstyle is and difficulty. Honestly, I see how my play goes. I don't follow strict rules. If I'm playing magicka based, I'll put more into Magicka. If I find my health is dipping too often, I'll start putting into health until its more comfortable.

If I'm doing more arms based (like my current build), I focus mostly on health, but put a few into stamina if I feel I'm not able to pull off as many bashes and power attacks as I want to be able to.

Basically, play and if you start feeling weak in one area, then start adding.

I like to take long hunting seasons as Werewolf, i invest in health and stamina 2:1. You really need a lot of health to be able to survive as a Werewolf on Legendary difficulty
