Heroes & Violence

Post » Sun Aug 03, 2014 3:02 pm

So after reading http://www.fimfiction.net/blog/297594/on-heroes-violence, I wanted to ask around on here as well to hear other thoughts on this. (You don't have to read the blog; just linked as a reference to what I've read. I do agree with a lot in it).

What is the nature of a hero?

Can a hero use violence to save the day (including killing the 'villain')?

Could there be a difference between a hero and a good person?

I would like to hear some thoughts on this and possibly have a respectful discussion on the subject.

A hero does what is right in the name of the greater good, which sometimes requires disregarding the notions of 'good' and 'evil'.

As a whole, being someone who abhors the use of violence, I'd be less likely to identify someone who uses violence as a hero. Obviously there are cases in which I would change my stance, though, because some people can only realistically be dealt with with violence, because they don't respond to reason or emotion.

Not only is everything subjective interpersonally but it's subjective intraqersonally. I guess I don't see much point in discussing the sort of thing that each person could only realistically interpret on a case-to-case basis.

Edit: On a note that Martyr made me think of, though, a reason it's difficult for me to nail something concretely down on this especially is because I do not consider good and evil to be anything more than thought constructs.

This thread made me think of a promo they aired on TV for the first Thor movie. They showed a trailer for the movie and said "this Memorial Day, go see a real hero". Kind of startling. This thread made me think of it.
