Does anyone actually use scrolls? How would you improve them?

Post » Tue Aug 12, 2014 6:57 am

What's the point of using them?

I understand that they are supposed to be a way for warrior or thief characters that don't use magic to cast powerful spells, but they are just pointless. After all, why would non magic characters you use magical scrolls?

We have staves that work similalry, but the difference is that they actually work:they allow non magic characters to use quite powerful spells like fireball without knowing that spell or investing in magicka.MULTIPLE TIMES.

At first I thought that staves are for projectile/damaging spells and scrolls are for on self spells, but then why do we have scroll of fireball? What's the point of that? Yeah, some scrolls are expert/master level and have good use,but scrolls are hard to find, some of them are pointless (for example magelight scroll), svck without perks (illusion scrolls that don't affect enemies) and worst of all: they are single use. I really want to use them, but my scroll heavy characters run out lifetime amount of scrolls in less than 5 mins....If enemies don't kill them before that.....

So what do you people think about scrolls?

Edit:Forgot to mention, spider scrolls are actually quite cool and unique, only if all scrolls in the game were like that! :D

The only scrolls my characters have used in any Elder Scrolls game (that I can remember) are those few that were required for quests.

I never use them. Only time I would even consider is if I played someone who used magic, but even then it feels cheap to use higher leveled spells when I haven't got the skill for it yet.

I don't use them : too rare, so it's the kind of items you keep for later, aka never. Also too expensive, so I don't think I've bought even 1 ever. So I just sell them all.

Well there's the spider scrolls, that you can craft on Solstheim, but since I never think of using scrolls to begin with, I can't say I've had much use for those either.

Oh and there's the 3 scrolls from the atronach forge, but why bother with those...

I never use them. And I almost never use staves on any warrior character anyway since they aren't augmented by the destruction or illusion tree anymore. So using a fireball that only does 40pts when I know it would almost be doubled to 75 on a Mage character seems silly and weak. No warrior characters fight only as....warriors for me and then my Mage characters don't need any silly scrolls obviously.

As a mystic archer, Buffy has all the spells she needs. More importantly, she doesn't think that fast on her feet; that is why she has to rely on well-practiced tactics and battle routines. Necessarily, that means skills and tools that she can always count on as opposed to the unpredictable vagarities of what she may find. No place for scrolls in her combat style.

That said, I'm sure there are characters who are comfortable with having to rely on what they find. Therefore, the presence of scrolls should remain.

Buffy does collect up 'summon storm atronach' scrolls, but those are for giving out to NPCs/followers who might have use for them. I'm not sure if NPC's/followers actually use them since our intent is mostly for roleplay.

Scrolls are just generic loot in Skyrim.

In Morrowind scrolls were the boss because they were very useful. But that's because some scrolls were VERY powerful. They were great for emergencies against high leveled characters.

And the generic scrolls you discovered were really useful, like soul trap scrolls. And the game would be very difficult with the lockbreaker scrolls which made it possible for warriors to get into locked areas and chests. Some quests could not be completed without scrolls.

I never do. Scrolls are too valuable to even be used IMO, so I hoard them and sell them later on.

It varies, some characters will use scrolls.

Many of my pure sneaks will use them (usually the guardian circle, cloaks, summons, etc) for those oh crap moments.... cast guardian circle, summon storm buddy, pop an invisibility potion and find a corner to watch and then assist

My mages have used them as well, again for moments when it's do or die... or to conserve magicka for their own spells (aka scroll of fireball to clear out skeletons before facing the deathlord)

I don't use them because they're boring. They're just normal spells without the magicka depletion. Just another thing Bethesda added to the game to make it seem larger than it actually is. I would have liked to see some effects unique to scrolls.

That is how they were in all the TES games, spells on paper that didn't need you to be a mage or have magicka to cast..

Pretty much never use scrolls. With one character I did try some scrolls but that's about it.

I wouldn't mind seeing unique spell scrolls in future games.

Yeah. I think scrolls should only be usable by high level mages in future games, myself. Imagine that with genuinely interesting effects. They should also be very powerful, but also very rare.

I've never used them in a TES game but I can understand the utility they bring for people not playing mages.

I tried to use scrolls early in my Skyrim career and gave up on them. The only ones powerful enough to be useful take too long to cast. Plus I could never tell from the animation exactly when they were ready to cast so I either released them slightly too soon and had to start over again, or some Draugr would plink me with an arrow or hit me with a frost spell and interrupt the casting and all the time was wasted. This makes them a liability rather than an asset, because the damage I was taking trying to use a scroll was greater than the damage they dished out. I stopped even picking up scrolls a long time ago. The only way I can see to improve them for people like me is make them quicker to cast, harder to interrupt and maybe change the color of the pretty lights so it would be easier to tell when to release.

Never used them. The only time I did was back in Morrowind when they had more unique and powerful effects.

I never use them. I think they're a wasted item and the only thing they are good for is just another item you can sell to a merchant in exchange for gold to get something a bit more useful. Like gold for Steel or Ebony Ingots!

They need to be cheaper and more plentiful to warrant more use from me. Y'know, by non mages.

Keep them relatively underpowered compared to their non-paper counterparts, but have some rare and expensive and powerful scrolls as well. Maybe even unique spells limited to scrolls.

I'm pretty much listing features scrolls had in past games now. On a side note, did anyone know that the Mehrunes Razor DLC had a "Ore Transmutation" scoll in it? Coz I didn't and I had to check whether it was added by a mod or not. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Mehrunes%27_Razor_Items#Other

If they had special effects of some kind or were all unique in some way then maybe I'd pick them up an use em. Since they are about as useful as toilet paper in a land with no bathroom habits, I always sell them.

Every Player knows that a Low Weight, yet Valuable Item is useless in a Game :D

My characters do hoard Scrolls that may be Usefull, but most Scrolls get converted into Gold very quickly.

I miss Scrolls of Windform from Morrowind, and the Paper Chase Scrolls from LAME (a very good Mod) in Oblivion.

I do utilise Spider Scrolls from Dragonborn, but I wish Bethesda made relocating the location possible, They gave us a House that a Housecarl or Wife can not use, and gave the House a large Spare Bedroom.

Complaining about the Scrolls of Fireball in Bleak Falls Barrow, then complaining about an Opponent on the trip to High Hrothgar is funny
