Skyrim CTD and PC restart

Post » Sun Aug 24, 2014 8:56 pm

Hey there Skyrim folks!

I am a die hard Skyrim player, clocking over 1700 hours. You would say I would have no problems with the game, but allas, I have. I have had problems for over 1000+ clock hours. See why I refer to myself as diehard.

So, here is the deal:

I am experiencing CTD's (crash to desktop) and random computer reboots for a very long time now. I have tried everything. I tried ENB, clean saves, reinstalls, no mods. And lately, I have tried again. I have installed my game, clean, two times in a row. I also tried this guide to no avail: http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Make_Skyrim_Vanilla_Again

I have used no mods what so ever. Using some in game coding (like god mode) I stressed the game with shooting spells everywhere. After less then 60 seconds my pc had a reboot.

After the reboot I get a 'serious error' fault with 'do you want to restart your pc in safe mode or normally?' Which I always get with a reboot after Skyrim.

Sometimes it are ctd's, at other times they are pc reboots with error messages. No error message pops up during ctd.

This generally happens when:

- A lot of activity during the game (fighting)

- Raising your hand (r-button) when (mostly) wielding magic

- Or just random walking around in town or in the wilderness.

- CTD can occur when travelling from one area to the next (wheter it is fast travel or not, ctd happens during loading screens). During this a reboot never happened.

I used to have mods, but not a lot, under the 15 for sure. Most were the unofficial patches, some vampire re-texture mods and some quest mods.

All these problems have started, as I recall, since the latest Skyrim patch (1.9 , but it also could be 1.8 or 1.7). But that has been a long time ago, I'm not sure. I am sure, though, that it hasn't always been like this.

Something else on the side note that I noticed. My game takes a whole long time to synchronize with Steam. Like, 20 min. when I start-up steam and another 20 min. to get the start up screen from Skyrim. Only Skyrim synchronizes this long. Even when I only have 2 saves in my list, I have no idea where this comes from, since I have very minimal save data to be synchronized.

Who oh who can help me :( ? Please, I want to enjoy the game for real, without worrying that I hit that quiksave button every 5 min. so I won't lose progress.

Here are my specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
BIOS: Ver: 04.05

Go to start menu, Right click on "my computer", or "computer" (whichever it is...) Select 'properties', (might be 'personalize'.) Go to the advanced tab, and the bottom section is "startup and recovery", click on the Settings button. In the 'system failure' section, UNcheck "automatically reboot". Click on Ok, or whatever, (NOT cancel...) and close everything out. Play the game. When your computer crashes, you should actually SEE the blue screen now. Write down the stop code, and which file it is whining about. Power cycle the machine, to get it to reboot, and then post that information here.

I suspect you have a hardware issue. Either some driver is messed up, or, you are overheating......

I just tried to kill the game, doing lots of big spells, bodies flying around in the city of Riften. But for some reason, my game decides to work perfectly fine now -.- .

I should add, though, that other games work perfectly fine without ctd's or restarts.

I think it's because the files are so big (for a save file anyway.) (1700 hours...huh !!!)

But it depends on your internet connection as well.

Well you can always turn off the Steam cloud and choose to play in the "off line mode".....shut steam down and reload your game.

Well, if you can play other games after many hours without CTD's or restarts, most probably you haven't any hardware failure.

vvvvvv

So, your only option is to start Skyrim vanilla, and play as many hours you can, to stress your system first without mods, and see if you system is stable enough.

Keep in mind, your GPU has only 1GB of VRAM, so you should be carefully what kind of mods your are installing.

To do a clean install:

First do a standard uninstall. (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features-> Uninstall The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

Next, delete your skyrim folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\

Then delete your Skyrim directory under Documents/ My Games after backing up your save files if you wish.

Then under C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Local\ - Delete the Skyrim folder that is in it.
(You should enable to see the hidden files under windows to delete that folder.) HOW: (View - Options - Folder Options - View - Advanced Settings: Show hidden files, folders and drives)

Use Ccleaner after all this (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner), and install your game again, from scratch. !!!!

You don't need to uninstall Steam.

Even you should monitor your Skyrim game-play with Skyrim Performance Monitor: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/6491/?

-------------------

It would be nice to disable any background applications you may have running at the background, even your Antivirus, if you thing it can cause problems with Skyrim.

Hey Dark, quick question about your PC restarting:

Was it restarting as if you pressed the restart button on your PC or was it restarting like the screen going dark but you can hear looped or choppy sound in the background until you force restart?
